They read scriptures, and contemplate the Vedas; they practice the inner cleansing techniques of Yoga, and control of the breath. But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. || 1 || O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord, Waheguru Ji; I have performed these rituals so many times. I have collapsed, exhausted, at the Door of my Lord, Waheguru Ji Master; I pray that He may grant me a discerning intellect. || Pause || One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest. He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. || 2 || His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off; but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. || 3 || He may give gifts of all sorts — gold, women, horses and elephants. He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord, Waheguru Ji's Door. || 4 || He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals. He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord, Waheguru Ji by these devices. || 5 || He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these. He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord, Waheguru Ji. || 6 || He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands. He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. || 7 || Singing the Kirtan of the Lord, Waheguru Ji's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions. Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. || 8 || Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours. The Destroyer of the pains of the poor has become merciful to me, and this mind is imbued with the Praises of the Lord, Waheguru Ji, Har, Har. || Second Pause || 1 || 3 ||

ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਨਿਵਲਿ ਭੁਅੰਗਮ ਸਾਧੇ ॥
पाठु पड़िओ अरु बेदु बीचारिओ निवलि भुअंगम साधे ॥
Pāṯẖ paṛi▫o ar beḏ bīcẖāri▫o nival bẖu▫angam sāḏẖe.

पंच जना सिउ संगु न छुटकिओ अधिक अह्मबुधि बाधे ॥१॥
Pancẖ janā si▫o sang na cẖẖutki▫o aḏẖik ahaʼn▫buḏẖ bāḏẖe. ||1||
But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. ||1||
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮੈ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
पिआरे इन बिधि मिलणु न जाई मै कीए करम अनेका ॥
Pi▫āre in biḏẖ milaṇ na jā▫ī mai kī▫e karam anekā.
O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord; I have performed these rituals so many times.
ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
हारि परिओ सुआमी कै दुआरै दीजै बुधि बिबेका ॥ रहाउ ॥
Hār pari▫o su▫āmī kai ḏu▫ārai ḏījai buḏẖ bibekā. Rahā▫o.
I have collapsed, exhausted, at the Door of my Lord Master; I pray that He may grant me a discerning intellect. ||Pause||
ਮੋਨਿ ਭਇਓ ਕਰਪਾਤੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਗਨ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
मोनि भइओ करपाती रहिओ नगन फिरिओ बन माही ॥
Mon bẖa▫i▫o karpāṯī rahi▫o nagan firi▫o ban māhī.
One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest.
ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
तट तीरथ सभ धरती भ्रमिओ दुबिधा छुटकै नाही ॥२॥
Ŧat ṯirath sabẖ ḏẖarṯī bẖarmi▫o ḏubiḏẖā cẖẖutkai nāhī. ||2||
He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. ||2||
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਇ ਬਸਿਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤ ਧਰਾਏ ॥
मन कामना तीरथ जाइ बसिओ सिरि करवत धराए ॥
Man kāmnā ṯirath jā▫e basi▫o sir karvaṯ ḏẖarā▫e.
His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off;
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
मन की मैलु न उतरै इह बिधि जे लख जतन कराए ॥३॥
Man kī mail na uṯrai ih biḏẖ je lakẖ jaṯan karā▫e. ||3||
but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. ||3||
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥
कनिक कामिनी हैवर गैवर बहु बिधि दानु दातारा ॥
Kanik kāminī haivar gaivar baho biḏẖ ḏān ḏāṯārā.
He may give gifts of all sorts - gold, women, horses and elephants.
ਅੰਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
अंन बसत्र भूमि बहु अरपे नह मिलीऐ हरि दुआरा ॥४॥
Ann basṯar bẖūm baho arpe nah milī▫ai har ḏu▫ārā. ||4||
He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord's Door. ||4||
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥
पूजा अरचा बंदन डंडउत खटु करमा रतु रहता ॥
Pūjā arcẖā banḏan dand▫uṯ kẖat karmā raṯ rahṯā.
He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals.
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥੫॥
हउ हउ करत बंधन महि परिआ नह मिलीऐ इह जुगता ॥५॥
Ha▫o ha▫o karaṯ banḏẖan mėh pari▫ā nah milī▫ai ih jugṯā. ||5||
He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord by these devices. ||5||
ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
जोग सिध आसण चउरासीह ए भी करि करि रहिआ ॥
Jog siḏẖ āsaṇ cẖa▫orāsīh e bẖī kar kar rahi▫ā.
He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these.
ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥
वडी आरजा फिरि फिरि जनमै हरि सिउ संगु न गहिआ ॥६॥
vadī ārjā fir fir janmai har si▫o sang na gahi▫ā. ||6||
He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord. ||6||
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥
राज लीला राजन की रचना करिआ हुकमु अफारा ॥
Rāj līlā rājan kī racẖnā kari▫ā hukam afārā.
He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands.
ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੋਆ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਕਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥
सेज सोहनी चंदनु चोआ नरक घोर का दुआरा ॥७॥
Sej sohnī cẖanḏan cẖo▫ā narak gẖor kā ḏu▫ārā. ||7||
He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
हरि कीरति साधसंगति है सिरि करमन कै करमा ॥
Har kīraṯ sāḏẖsangaṯ hai sir karman kai karmā.
Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਇਓ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਨਾ ॥੮॥
कहु नानक तिसु भइओ परापति जिसु पुरब लिखे का लहना ॥८॥
Kaho Nānak ṯis bẖa▫i▫o parāpaṯ jis purab likẖe kā lahnā. ||8||
Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. ||8||
ਤੇਰੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਇਹ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
तेरो सेवकु इह रंगि माता ॥
Ŧero sevak ih rang māṯā.
Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours.
ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੩॥
भइओ क्रिपालु दीन दुख भंजनु हरि हरि कीरतनि इहु मनु राता ॥ रहाउ दूजा ॥१॥३॥
Bẖa▫i▫o kirpāl ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan har har kīrṯan ih man rāṯā. Rahā▫o ḏūjā. ||1||3||

ਰਾਗ ਸੋਰਠਿ, ਘਰ ੨ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅੱਠ-ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਨਿਵਲਿ ਭੁਅੰਗਮ ਸਾਧੇ ॥ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਛੁਟਕਿਓ ਅਧਿਕ ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਬਾਧੇ ॥੧॥
ਇਨਸਾਨ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੋਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵੇਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਗੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੜਿਓ = ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ (ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ)। ਅਰੁ = ਅਤੇ। ਨਿਵਲਿ = ਖਲੋ ਕੇ, ਗੋਡਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ, ਸਾਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਲ ਖਿੱਚ ਕੇ, ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਵਾਣਾ; ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਪੇਟ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਕਬਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ। ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਪੇਟ ਕਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭੁਅੰਗਮ = ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ, ਭੁਯੰਗਮ। ਪਿੱਠ ਦੀ ਕੰਗਰੋੜ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਸਰਪਣੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਧੇ = ਸਾਧਨ ਕੀਤੇ (ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ)। ਸਿਉ = ਨਾਲ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਛੁਟਕਿਓ = ਮੁੱਕ ਸਕਿਆ। ਅਧਿਕ = ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਕ। ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ = ਅਹੰਕਾਰ-ਭਰੀ ਮਤਿ। ਬਾਧੇ = ਬੱਝ ਗਏ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਵਲੀਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਸਗੋਂ) ਵਧੀਕ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮੈ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ! ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਐਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਥੱਕ ਟੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਢਹਿ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਲਈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਪਿਆਰੇ = ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ = ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ। ਮੈ = ਮੇਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ। ਹਾਰਿ = ਹਾਰ ਕੇ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ। ਪਰਿਓ = ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ। ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ = ਦੇ ਦਰ ਉਤੇ। ਬਿਬੇਕਾ = ਪਰਖ।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਲੋਕ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਡਿੱਗਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਲਾਈ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਦੀ) ਪਰਖ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੱਤਲ ਬਣਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਨੰਗ-ਧੜੰਗ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹੇ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆਂ, ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਰਟਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ, ਪਰ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਖਹਿੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੀ।
ਮੋਨਿ ਭਇਓ = ਕੋਈ ਚੁੱਪ ਸਾਧੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ। ਕਰਪਾਤੀ = {ਕਰ = ਹੱਥ। ਪਾਤ੍ਰ = ਭਾਂਡਾ} ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਬਣਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਮਾਹੀ = ਵਿਚ। ਤਟ = ਦਰੀਆ ਦਾ ਕੰਢਾ। ਸਭ = ਸਾਰੀ। ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ = ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਿਆ। ਦੁਬਿਧਾ = ਦੁ-ਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ, ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ, ਡਾਵਾਂ ਡੋਲ ਮਾਨਸਕ ਦਸ਼ਾ। ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ = ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੁੱਪ ਸਾਧੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕਰ-ਪਾਤੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ), ਕੋਈ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਨੰਗਾ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਟਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਡਾਂਵਾਂ-ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।੨।
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਇ ਬਸਿਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤ ਧਰਾਏ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਚਾਹਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਵਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਰੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਭਾਵਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਲੱਖੂਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਪਿਆ ਕਰੇ।
ਕਾਮਨਾ = ਇੱਛਾ, ਫੁਰਨਾ। ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ। ਕਰਵਤ = ਆਰਾ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਰਾ ਜੋ ਬਨਾਰਸ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ-ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਿਵ = ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਈ ਭੁੱਲੜ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਆਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਚਿਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ = ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਨੋ-ਕਾਮਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ) ਆਰਾ ਰਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ।੩।
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਅੰਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
ਉਹ ਦਾਨੀ ਜਨ ਹੋ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੋਨਾ, ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ, ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਥੀ। ਉਹ ਅਨਾਜ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਖੈਰਾਤ ਕਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ।
ਕਨਿਕ = ਸੋਨਾ। ਕਾਮਿਨੀ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਹੈਵਰ = {हयवर} ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ। ਗੈਵਰ = {गजवर} ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ। ਦਾਤਾਰਾ = ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਅਰਪੇ = ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ = ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ।੪।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਨਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ, ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ (ਅਤੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ।੪।
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥੫॥
ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਉਹ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ, ਆਰਾਧਨ, ਲੰਮੇ ਪੈ ਨਿਮਸ਼ਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਛਿਆਂ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੇ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ, ਉਹ ਘਣਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਰਚਾ = ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ। ਬੰਧਨ = ਨਮਸਕਾਰ। ਡੰਡਉਤ = ਡੰਡੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਲੰਮੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ। ਖਟੁ = ਛੇ। ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ = ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਛੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ = ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ, ਜੱਗ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਾਣਾ, ਦਾਨ ਦੇਣਾ ਤੇ ਲੈਣਾ। ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ = ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਉ ਹਉ = ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ। ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ = ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ।੫।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਵਿਚ, ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ, ਛੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਭੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੀਦਾ।੫।
ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥ ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥
ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਚੁਰਾਸੀ ਬੈਠਣ ਦੇ ਢੰਗ, ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਹਾਰ ਹੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਪਾ ਲਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਧ = ਜੋਗ = ਆਸਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੋਗੀ। ਰਹਿਆ = ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ। ਆਰਜਾ = ਉਮਰ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਗਹਿਆ = ਲੱਭਾ।੬।
ਜੋਗ-ਮਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਆਸਣ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਆਸਣ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਮਰ ਤਾਂ ਲੰਮੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੬।
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥ ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੋਆ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਕਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥
ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਨਾ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ, ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਡੰਬਰਾਂ ਰਚੇ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਬਦਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ-ਭਰਪੂਰ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰੇ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਚੰਨਣ ਅਗਰ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਅੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਗੰਧਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੋਣ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੋਜਕ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਲੀਲਾ = ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ। ਰਚਨਾ = ਠਾਠ-ਬਾਠ। ਅਫਾਰਾ = ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮੋੜ ਨਾਹ ਸਕੇ। ਚੋਆ = ਅਤਰ। ਘੋਰ = ਭਿਆਨਕ।੭।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਰਾਜ-ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਠਾਠ-ਬਾਠ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਚਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ) ਚੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਰ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤਾਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਨਰਕ ਵਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।੭।
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਇਓ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਨਾ ॥੮॥
ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਕੀਰਤਿ = ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ। ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਭ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ, ਸਭ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ। ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ = ਪਹਿਲੇ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਲੇਖ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ।੮।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ-ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ। ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-ਇਹ ਅਵਸਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੮।
ਤੇਰੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਇਹ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੩॥
ਤੇਰਾ ਗੋਲਾ, ਹੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਮਸਕੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।
ਰੰਗਿ = ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ। ਮਾਤਾ = ਮਸਤ। ਕੀਰਤਨਿ = ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵਿਚ। ਰਾਤਾ = ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।੧।੩।

They read scriptures, and contemplate the Vedas; they practice the inner cleansing techniques of Yoga, and control of the breath. But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. || 1 || O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord, Waheguru Ji; I have performed these rituals so many times. I have collapsed, exhausted, at the Door of my Lord, Waheguru Ji Master; I pray that He may grant me a discerning intellect. || Pause || One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest. He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. || 2 || His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off; but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. || 3 || He may give gifts of all sorts — gold, women, horses and elephants. He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord, Waheguru Ji's Door. || 4 || He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals. He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord, Waheguru Ji by these devices. || 5 || He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these. He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord, Waheguru Ji. || 6 || He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands. He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. || 7 || Singing the Kirtan of the Lord, Waheguru Ji's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions. Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. || 8 || Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours. ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਨਿਵਲਿ ਭੁਅੰਗਮ ਸਾਧੇ ॥
पाठु पड़िओ अरु बेदु बीचारिओ निवलि भुअंगम साधे ॥
Pāṯẖ paṛi▫o ar beḏ bīcẖāri▫o nival bẖu▫angam sāḏẖe.

पंच जना सिउ संगु न छुटकिओ अधिक अह्मबुधि बाधे ॥१॥
Pancẖ janā si▫o sang na cẖẖutki▫o aḏẖik ahaʼn▫buḏẖ bāḏẖe. ||1||
But they cannot escape from the company of the five passions; they are increasingly bound to egotism. ||1||
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮੈ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
पिआरे इन बिधि मिलणु न जाई मै कीए करम अनेका ॥
Pi▫āre in biḏẖ milaṇ na jā▫ī mai kī▫e karam anekā.
O Beloved, this is not the way to meet the Lord; I have performed these rituals so many times.
ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
हारि परिओ सुआमी कै दुआरै दीजै बुधि बिबेका ॥ रहाउ ॥
Hār pari▫o su▫āmī kai ḏu▫ārai ḏījai buḏẖ bibekā. Rahā▫o.

Mon bẖa▫i▫o karpāṯī rahi▫o nagan firi▫o ban māhī.
One may remain silent and use his hands as begging bowls, and wander naked in the forest.
ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
तट तीरथ सभ धरती भ्रमिओ दुबिधा छुटकै नाही ॥२॥
Ŧat ṯirath sabẖ ḏẖarṯī bẖarmi▫o ḏubiḏẖā cẖẖutkai nāhī. ||2||
He may make pilgrimages to river banks and sacred shrines all over the world, but his sense of duality will not leave him. ||2||
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਇ ਬਸਿਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤ ਧਰਾਏ ॥
मन कामना तीरथ जाइ बसिओ सिरि करवत धराए ॥
Man kāmnā ṯirath jā▫e basi▫o sir karvaṯ ḏẖarā▫e.
His mind's desires may lead him to go and dwell at sacred places of pilgrimage, and offer his head to be sawn off;
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
मन की मैलु न उतरै इह बिधि जे लख जतन कराए ॥३॥
Man kī mail na uṯrai ih biḏẖ je lakẖ jaṯan karā▫e. ||3||
but this will not cause the filth of his mind to depart, even though he may make thousands of efforts. ||3||
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥
कनिक कामिनी हैवर गैवर बहु बिधि दानु दातारा ॥
Kanik kāminī haivar gaivar baho biḏẖ ḏān ḏāṯārā.
He may give gifts of all sorts - gold, women, horses and elephants.
ਅੰਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
अंन बसत्र भूमि बहु अरपे नह मिलीऐ हरि दुआरा ॥४॥
Ann basṯar bẖūm baho arpe nah milī▫ai har ḏu▫ārā. ||4||
He may make offerings of corn, clothes and land in abundance, but this will not lead him to the Lord's Door. ||4||
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥
पूजा अरचा बंदन डंडउत खटु करमा रतु रहता ॥
Pūjā arcẖā banḏan dand▫uṯ kẖat karmā raṯ rahṯā.
He may remain devoted to worship and adoration, bowing his forehead to the floor, practicing the six religious rituals.
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥੫॥
हउ हउ करत बंधन महि परिआ नह मिलीऐ इह जुगता ॥५॥
Ha▫o ha▫o karaṯ banḏẖan mėh pari▫ā nah milī▫ai ih jugṯā. ||5||
He indulges in egotism and pride, and falls into entanglements, but he does not meet the Lord by these devices. ||5||
ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
जोग सिध आसण चउरासीह ए भी करि करि रहिआ ॥
Jog siḏẖ āsaṇ cẖa▫orāsīh e bẖī kar kar rahi▫ā.
He practices the eighty-four postures of Yoga, and acquires the supernatural powers of the Siddhas, but he gets tired of practicing these.
ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥
वडी आरजा फिरि फिरि जनमै हरि सिउ संगु न गहिआ ॥६॥
vadī ārjā fir fir janmai har si▫o sang na gahi▫ā. ||6||
He lives a long life, but is reincarnated again and again; he has not met with the Lord. ||6||
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥
राज लीला राजन की रचना करिआ हुकमु अफारा ॥
Rāj līlā rājan kī racẖnā kari▫ā hukam afārā.
He may enjoy princely pleasures, and regal pomp and ceremony, and issue unchallenged commands.
ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੋਆ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਕਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥
सेज सोहनी चंदनु चोआ नरक घोर का दुआरा ॥७॥
Sej sohnī cẖanḏan cẖo▫ā narak gẖor kā ḏu▫ārā. ||7||
He may lie on beautiful beds, perfumed with sandalwood oil, but this will led him only to the gates of the most horrible hell. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
हरि कीरति साधसंगति है सिरि करमन कै करमा ॥
Har kīraṯ sāḏẖsangaṯ hai sir karman kai karmā.
Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is the highest of all actions.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਇਓ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਨਾ ॥੮॥
कहु नानक तिसु भइओ परापति जिसु पुरब लिखे का लहना ॥८॥
Kaho Nānak ṯis bẖa▫i▫o parāpaṯ jis purab likẖe kā lahnā. ||8||
Says Nanak, he alone obtains it, who is pre-destined to receive it. ||8||
ਤੇਰੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਇਹ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
तेरो सेवकु इह रंगि माता ॥
Ŧero sevak ih rang māṯā.
Your slave is intoxicated with this Love of Yours.
ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੩॥
भइओ क्रिपालु दीन दुख भंजनु हरि हरि कीरतनि इहु मनु राता ॥ रहाउ दूजा ॥१॥३॥
Bẖa▫i▫o kirpāl ḏīn ḏukẖ bẖanjan har har kīrṯan ih man rāṯā. Rahā▫o ḏūjā. ||1||3||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੋਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵੇਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਗੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੜਿਓ = ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ (ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ)। ਅਰੁ = ਅਤੇ। ਨਿਵਲਿ = ਖਲੋ ਕੇ, ਗੋਡਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ, ਸਾਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਲ ਖਿੱਚ ਕੇ, ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਵਾਣਾ; ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਪੇਟ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਕਬਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ। ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਪੇਟ ਕਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭੁਅੰਗਮ = ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ, ਭੁਯੰਗਮ। ਪਿੱਠ ਦੀ ਕੰਗਰੋੜ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਸਰਪਣੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਧੇ = ਸਾਧਨ ਕੀਤੇ (ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ)। ਸਿਉ = ਨਾਲ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਛੁਟਕਿਓ = ਮੁੱਕ ਸਕਿਆ। ਅਧਿਕ = ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਕ। ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ = ਅਹੰਕਾਰ-ਭਰੀ ਮਤਿ। ਬਾਧੇ = ਬੱਝ ਗਏ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਵਲੀਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਸਗੋਂ) ਵਧੀਕ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮੈ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ! ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਐਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਮੈਂ ਥੱਕ ਟੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਢਹਿ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਲਈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਪਿਆਰੇ = ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ = ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ। ਮੈ = ਮੇਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ। ਹਾਰਿ = ਹਾਰ ਕੇ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ। ਪਰਿਓ = ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ। ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ = ਦੇ ਦਰ ਉਤੇ। ਬਿਬੇਕਾ = ਪਰਖ।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਲੋਕ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਡਿੱਗਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਲਾਈ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਦੀ) ਪਰਖ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਮੋਨਿ ਭਇਓ ਕਰਪਾਤੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਗਨ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
ਇਨਸਾਨ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੱਤਲ ਬਣਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਨੰਗ-ਧੜੰਗ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹੇ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆਂ, ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਰਟਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ, ਪਰ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਖਹਿੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੀ।
ਮੋਨਿ ਭਇਓ = ਕੋਈ ਚੁੱਪ ਸਾਧੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ। ਕਰਪਾਤੀ = {ਕਰ = ਹੱਥ। ਪਾਤ੍ਰ = ਭਾਂਡਾ} ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਬਣਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਮਾਹੀ = ਵਿਚ। ਤਟ = ਦਰੀਆ ਦਾ ਕੰਢਾ। ਸਭ = ਸਾਰੀ। ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ = ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਿਆ। ਦੁਬਿਧਾ = ਦੁ-ਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ, ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ, ਡਾਵਾਂ ਡੋਲ ਮਾਨਸਕ ਦਸ਼ਾ। ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ = ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੁੱਪ ਸਾਧੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕਰ-ਪਾਤੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ), ਕੋਈ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਨੰਗਾ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਟਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਡਾਂਵਾਂ-ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।੨।
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਇ ਬਸਿਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤ ਧਰਾਏ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਚਾਹਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਵਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਰੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਭਾਵਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਲੱਖੂਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਪਿਆ ਕਰੇ।
ਕਾਮਨਾ = ਇੱਛਾ, ਫੁਰਨਾ। ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ। ਕਰਵਤ = ਆਰਾ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਰਾ ਜੋ ਬਨਾਰਸ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ-ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਿਵ = ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਈ ਭੁੱਲੜ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਆਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਚਿਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ = ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਨੋ-ਕਾਮਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ) ਆਰਾ ਰਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ।੩।
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਅੰਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਹੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
ਉਹ ਦਾਨੀ ਜਨ ਹੋ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੋਨਾ, ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ, ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਥੀ। ਉਹ ਅਨਾਜ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਖੈਰਾਤ ਕਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ।
ਕਨਿਕ = ਸੋਨਾ। ਕਾਮਿਨੀ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਹੈਵਰ = {हयवर} ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ। ਗੈਵਰ = {गजवर} ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ। ਦਾਤਾਰਾ = ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਅਰਪੇ = ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ = ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ।੪।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਨਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ, ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ (ਅਤੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ।੪।
ਪੂਜਾ ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ ॥ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥੫॥
ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਉਹ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ, ਆਰਾਧਨ, ਲੰਮੇ ਪੈ ਨਿਮਸ਼ਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਛਿਆਂ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੇ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ, ਉਹ ਘਣਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਰਚਾ = ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ। ਬੰਧਨ = ਨਮਸਕਾਰ। ਡੰਡਉਤ = ਡੰਡੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਲੰਮੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ। ਖਟੁ = ਛੇ। ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ = ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਛੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ = ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ, ਜੱਗ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਾਣਾ, ਦਾਨ ਦੇਣਾ ਤੇ ਲੈਣਾ। ਰਤੁ ਰਹਤਾ = ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਉ ਹਉ = ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ। ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਾ = ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ।੫।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਵਿਚ, ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ, ਛੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਭੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮੀ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੀਦਾ।੫।
ਜੋਗ ਸਿਧ ਆਸਣ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਏ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥ ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਗਹਿਆ ॥੬॥
ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਚੁਰਾਸੀ ਬੈਠਣ ਦੇ ਢੰਗ, ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਹਾਰ ਹੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਲੰਮੀ ਉਮਰ ਪਾ ਲਵੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਧ = ਜੋਗ = ਆਸਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੋਗੀ। ਰਹਿਆ = ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ। ਆਰਜਾ = ਉਮਰ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਗਹਿਆ = ਲੱਭਾ।੬।
ਜੋਗ-ਮਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਆਸਣ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਆਸਣ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਮਰ ਤਾਂ ਲੰਮੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੬।
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥ ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਨੀ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੋਆ ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਕਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥
ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਨਾ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ, ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਡੰਬਰਾਂ ਰਚੇ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਬਦਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ-ਭਰਪੂਰ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰੇ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਚੰਨਣ ਅਗਰ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਅੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਗੰਧਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੋਣ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੋਜਕ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਲੀਲਾ = ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ। ਰਚਨਾ = ਠਾਠ-ਬਾਠ। ਅਫਾਰਾ = ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮੋੜ ਨਾਹ ਸਕੇ। ਚੋਆ = ਅਤਰ। ਘੋਰ = ਭਿਆਨਕ।੭।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਰਾਜ-ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਠਾਠ-ਬਾਠ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਚਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ) ਚੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਰ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤਾਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਨਰਕ ਵਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।੭।
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਇਓ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਨਾ ॥੮॥
ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਕੀਰਤਿ = ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ। ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਭ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ, ਸਭ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ। ਪੁਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ = ਪਹਿਲੇ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਲੇਖ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ।੮।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ-ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ। ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-ਇਹ ਅਵਸਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੮।

ਤੇਰਾ ਗੋਲਾ, ਹੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਮਸਕੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।
ਰੰਗਿ = ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ। ਮਾਤਾ = ਮਸਤ। ਕੀਰਤਨਿ = ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵਿਚ। ਰਾਤਾ = ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ।੧।੩।
