First, he came to dwell in his mother's womb; leaving it, he came into the world. Splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces — none of these shall go with him. || 1 || All other greeds of the greedy are false. My Perfect Guru Ji has given me the Name of the Lord, Waheguru Ji, which my soul has come to treasure. || 1 || Pause || Surrounded by dear friends, relatives, children, siblings and spouse, he laughs playfully. But when the very last moment arrives, Death seizes him, while they merely look on. || 2 || By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money, but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. || 3 || He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own. But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. || 4 || The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper. The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. || 5 || 1 || 8 ||

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਊਹਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
प्रथमे गरभ माता कै वासा ऊहा छोडि धरनि महि आइआ ॥
Parathme garabẖ māṯā kai vāsā ūhā cẖẖod ḏẖaran mėh ā▫i▫ā.
First, he came to dwell in his mother's womb; leaving it, he came into the world.
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛਹੂ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
चित्र साल सुंदर बाग मंदर संगि न कछहू जाइआ ॥१॥
Cẖiṯar sāl sunḏar bāg manḏar sang na kacẖẖhū jā▫i▫ā. ||1||
Splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces - none of these shall go with him. ||1||
ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭ ਲਬੀ ॥
अवर सभ मिथिआ लोभ लबी ॥
Avar sabẖ mithi▫ā lobẖ labī.
All other greeds of the greedy are false.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਫਬੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुरि पूरै दीओ हरि नामा जीअ कउ एहा वसतु फबी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gur pūrai ḏī▫o har nāmā jī▫a ka▫o ehā vasaṯ fabī. ||1|| rahā▫o.
The Perfect Guru has given me the Name of the Lord, which my soul has come to treasure. ||1||Pause||
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਰਚਿ ਹਸਿਆ ॥
इसट मीत बंधप सुत भाई संगि बनिता रचि हसिआ ॥
Isat mīṯ banḏẖap suṯ bẖā▫ī sang baniṯā racẖ hasi▫ā.
Surrounded by dear friends, relatives, children, siblings and spouse, he laughs playfully.
ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥
जब अंती अउसरु आइ बनिओ है उन्ह पेखत ही कालि ग्रसिआ ॥२॥
Jab anṯī a▫osar ā▫e bani▫o hai unĥ pekẖaṯ hī kāl garsi▫ā. ||2||
But when the very last moment arrives, Death seizes him, while they merely look on. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥
करि करि अनरथ बिहाझी स्मपै सुइना रूपा दामा ॥
Kar kar anrath bihājẖī sampai su▫inā rūpā ḏāmā.
By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money,
ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
भाड़ी कउ ओहु भाड़ा मिलिआ होरु सगल भइओ बिराना ॥३॥
Bẖāṛī ka▫o oh bẖāṛā mili▫ā hor sagal bẖa▫i▫o birānā. ||3||
but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3||
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
हैवर गैवर रथ स्मबाहे गहु करि कीने मेरे ॥
Haivar gaivar rath sambāhe gahu kar kīne mere.
He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own.
ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥
जब ते होई लांमी धाई चलहि नाही इक पैरे ॥४॥
Jab ṯe ho▫ī lāʼnmī ḏẖā▫ī cẖalėh nāhī ik paire. ||4||
But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
नामु धनु नामु सुख राजा नामु कुट्मब सहाई ॥
Nām ḏẖan nām sukẖ rājā nām kutamb sahā▫ī.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥
नामु स्मपति गुरि नानक कउ दीई ओह मरै न आवै जाई ॥५॥१॥८॥
Nām sampaṯ gur Nānak ka▫o ḏī▫ī oh marai na āvai jā▫ī. ||5||1||8||

ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਖੁਸ਼ਨਮਾ ਘਰ, ਸੁਹਣੇ ਬਗੀਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਿਲ, ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ।
ਪੰਚਪਦਾ = ਪੰਜ ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ। ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ = ਪਹਿਲਾਂ। ਊਹਾ = ਉਹ ਥਾਂ। ਧਰਨਿ = ਧਰਤੀ। ਚਿਤ੍ਰ = ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ। ਚਿਤ੍ਰਸਾਲ = ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ। ਸੰਗਿ = ਨਾਲ। ਕਛਹੂ = ਕੁਝ ਭੀ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੀਵ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ) ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਥੇ) ਚਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਾਗ਼ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੧।

ਲਾਲਚੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਕੂੜੇ ਹਨ। ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਏਹੋ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਵਸਤੂ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਫਬਦੀ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ = ਝੂਠਾ। ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ = ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਜੀਅ ਕਉ = ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ। ਫਬੀ = ਸੁਖਾਵੀਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ। (ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਵੀਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ, ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਾਸੇ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਦ ਅਖੀਰ ਦਾ ਵੇਲਾ ਆ ਢੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸਟ = ਪਿਆਰੇ। ਬੰਧਪ = ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ। ਸੁਤ = ਪੁੱਤਰ। ਬਨਿਤਾ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਰਚਿ = ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਕੇ, ਗੂੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ। ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ = ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲਾ ਸਮਾਂ, ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਘੜੀ। ਕਾਲਿ = ਮੌਤ ਨੇ। ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ = ਆ ਫੜਿਆ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਭਰਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੂੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਹੱਸਦਾ-ਖੇਡਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਅੰਤਲਾ ਸਮਾ ਆ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਆ ਫੜਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।

ਅਤਿਆਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ, ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਦੇ ਟੱਟੂ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਰਥ = ਧੱਕੇ, ਪਾਪ। ਸੰਪੈ = ਦੌਲਤ। ਰੂਪਾ = ਚਾਂਦੀ। ਦਾਮਾ = ਦਮੜੇ। ਭਾੜੀ = ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ।੩।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਧੱਕੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੌਲਤ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ) ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ (ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ, ਦੌਲਤ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ) ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਰਹੀ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥

ਧਿੰਗੋਜੋਰੀ ਖੋਹ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਘੋੜੇ, ਹਾਥੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਦ ਉਹ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਫਰ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਕਦਮ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁਰਦੇ।
ਹੈਵਰ = ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ {ਹਯ ਵਰ}। ਗੈਵਰ = ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਾਥੀ {ਗਜ ਵਰ}। ਸੰਬਾਹੇ = ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕੀਤੇ। ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ = ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ। ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ = ਆਪਣੇ ਬਣਾਏ। ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ = ਲੰਮਾ ਕੂਚ।੪।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ ਰਥ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਲੰਮਾ ਕੂਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਕ ਪੈਰ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ।੪।

ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥
जब अंती अउसरु आइ बनिओ है उन्ह पेखत ही कालि ग्रसिआ ॥२॥
Jab anṯī a▫osar ā▫e bani▫o hai unĥ pekẖaṯ hī kāl garsi▫ā. ||2||

करि करि अनरथ बिहाझी स्मपै सुइना रूपा दामा ॥
Kar kar anrath bihājẖī sampai su▫inā rūpā ḏāmā.
By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money,
ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
भाड़ी कउ ओहु भाड़ा मिलिआ होरु सगल भइओ बिराना ॥३॥
Bẖāṛī ka▫o oh bẖāṛā mili▫ā hor sagal bẖa▫i▫o birānā. ||3||
but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3||
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
हैवर गैवर रथ स्मबाहे गहु करि कीने मेरे ॥
Haivar gaivar rath sambāhe gahu kar kīne mere.
He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own.
ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥
जब ते होई लांमी धाई चलहि नाही इक पैरे ॥४॥
Jab ṯe ho▫ī lāʼnmī ḏẖā▫ī cẖalėh nāhī ik paire. ||4||
But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||

ਆਦਮੀ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਖੁਸ਼ਨਮਾ ਘਰ, ਸੁਹਣੇ ਬਗੀਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਿਲ, ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ।
ਪੰਚਪਦਾ = ਪੰਜ ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ। ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ = ਪਹਿਲਾਂ। ਊਹਾ = ਉਹ ਥਾਂ। ਧਰਨਿ = ਧਰਤੀ। ਚਿਤ੍ਰ = ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ। ਚਿਤ੍ਰਸਾਲ = ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ। ਸੰਗਿ = ਨਾਲ। ਕਛਹੂ = ਕੁਝ ਭੀ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੀਵ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ) ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਥੇ) ਚਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਾਗ਼ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੧।

ਲਾਲਚੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਕੂੜੇ ਹਨ। ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਏਹੋ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਵਸਤੂ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਫਬਦੀ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ = ਝੂਠਾ। ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ = ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਜੀਅ ਕਉ = ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ। ਫਬੀ = ਸੁਖਾਵੀਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ। (ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਵੀਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ, ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਾਸੇ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਦ ਅਖੀਰ ਦਾ ਵੇਲਾ ਆ ਢੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸਟ = ਪਿਆਰੇ। ਬੰਧਪ = ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ। ਸੁਤ = ਪੁੱਤਰ। ਬਨਿਤਾ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਰਚਿ = ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਕੇ, ਗੂੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ। ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ = ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲਾ ਸਮਾਂ, ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਘੜੀ। ਕਾਲਿ = ਮੌਤ ਨੇ। ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ = ਆ ਫੜਿਆ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਭਰਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੂੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਹੱਸਦਾ-ਖੇਡਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਅੰਤਲਾ ਸਮਾ ਆ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਆ ਫੜਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥ ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money, but the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3||
ਅਤਿਆਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ, ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਕਿਰਾਏ ਦੇ ਟੱਟੂ ਨੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਰਥ = ਧੱਕੇ, ਪਾਪ। ਸੰਪੈ = ਦੌਲਤ। ਰੂਪਾ = ਚਾਂਦੀ। ਦਾਮਾ = ਦਮੜੇ। ਭਾੜੀ = ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ।੩।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਧੱਕੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੌਲਤ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ) ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ (ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ, ਦੌਲਤ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ) ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਰਹੀ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥
He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own. But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||
ਧਿੰਗੋਜੋਰੀ ਖੋਹ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਘੋੜੇ, ਹਾਥੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਦ ਉਹ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਫਰ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਕਦਮ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁਰਦੇ।
ਹੈਵਰ = ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ {ਹਯ ਵਰ}। ਗੈਵਰ = ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਾਥੀ {ਗਜ ਵਰ}। ਸੰਬਾਹੇ = ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕੀਤੇ। ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ = ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ। ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ = ਆਪਣੇ ਬਣਾਏ। ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ = ਲੰਮਾ ਕੂਚ।੪।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ ਰਥ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਲੰਮਾ ਕੂਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਕ ਪੈਰ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ।੪।
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper. The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. ||5||1||8||
ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਲ-ਦੌਲਤ, ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਆਰਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰਾ ਟੱਬਰ ਕਬੀਲਾ ਤੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਹੈ। ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਲ ਧਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਿਧਰੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ = ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ, ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ। ਕੁਟੰਬ = ਪਰਵਾਰ। ਸਹਾਈ = ਸਾਥੀ। ਸੰਪਤਿ = ਦੌਲਤ। ਗੁਰਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਕਉ = ਨੂੰ।੫।
