O dear friend, know this in your mind.
ਅਪਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਹੀ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਂਧਿਓ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
अपने सुख सिउ ही जगु फांधिओ को काहू को नाही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Apne sukẖ si▫o hī jag fāʼnḏẖi▫o ko kāhū ko nāhī. ||1|| rahā▫o.

In good times, many come and sit together, surrounding you on all four sides.
ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪਰੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿਤ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਨੇਰੈ ॥੧॥
बिपति परी सभ ही संगु छाडित कोऊ न आवत नेरै ॥१॥
Bipaṯ parī sabẖ hī sang cẖẖādiṯ ko▫ū na āvaṯ nerai. ||1||
But when hard times come, they all leave, and no one comes near you. ||1||
ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਤ ਸੰਗ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
घर की नारि बहुतु हितु जा सिउ सदा रहत संग लागी ॥
Gẖar kī nār bahuṯ hiṯ jā si▫o saḏā rahaṯ sang lāgī.
Your wife, whom you love so much, and who has remained ever attached to you,
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹੰਸ ਤਜੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੨॥
जब ही हंस तजी इह कांइआ प्रेत प्रेत करि भागी ॥२॥
Jab hī hans ṯajī ih kāʼn▫i▫ā pareṯ pareṯ kar bẖāgī. ||2||
runs away crying, "Ghost! Ghost!", as soon as the swan-soul leaves this body. ||2||
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥
इह बिधि को बिउहारु बनिओ है जा सिउ नेहु लगाइओ ॥
Ih biḏẖ ko bi▫uhār bani▫o hai jā si▫o nehu lagā▫i▫o.
This is the way they act - those whom we love so much.
ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋਊ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥੩॥੧੨॥੧੩੯॥
अंत बार नानक बिनु हरि जी कोऊ कामि न आइओ ॥३॥१२॥१३९॥
Anṯ bār Nānak bin har jī ko▫ū kām na ā▫i▫o. ||3||12||139||
At the very last moment, O Nanak, no one is any use at all, except the Dear Lord. ||3||12||139||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਨੌਵੀਂ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ। ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਾ! ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ, ਕਿ ਜਹਾਨ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਾਬਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰਸ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ = ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਮਾਹੀ = ਵਿਚ। ਸਿਉ = ਨਾਲ। ਫਾਂਧਿਓ = ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋ = ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ = ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ, (ਕਿ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਬਣਦਾ)।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀਆਂ ਕਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਘੇਰ ਕੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਬਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਦ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਤਿਆਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਆਨਿ = ਆ ਕੇ। ਮਿਲਿ = ਮਿਲ ਕੇ। ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ = ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ। ਰਹਤ ਘੇਰੈ = ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਕੋਊ = ਕੋਈ ਭੀ।੧।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ)! ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ (ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ) ਕਈ ਯਾਰ ਦੋਸਤ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਪਾਸ) ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ) ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਫਿਰ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।੧।
ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਤ ਸੰਗ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹੰਸ ਤਜੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੨॥
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਘਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਰਾਜਹੰਸ-ਆਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਭੀ "ਭੂਤ! ਭੂਤ!" ਆਖਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਰਿ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਹਿਤੁ = ਪਿਆਰ। ਜਾ ਸਿਉ = ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ। ਸੰਗਿ = ਨਾਲ {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਸੰਗੁ' ਅਤੇ 'ਸੰਗਿ' ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ}। ਹੰਸ = ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ। ਕਾਂਇਆ = ਸਰੀਰ। ਪ੍ਰੇਤ = ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਚੁਕਾ, ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ। ਕਰਿ = ਆਖ ਕੇ।੨।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਘਰ ਦੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਭੀ), ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਸਦਾ (ਖਸਮ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਹੀ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪਤੀ ਦਾ) ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਕੇ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥ ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋਊ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥੩॥੧੨॥੧੩੯॥
ਇਹ ਹੈ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਤ-ਵਰਤਾਵੇ ਦਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਖੀਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ = ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ। ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ = ਵਰਤਾਰਾ। ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ = ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ। ਕਾਮਿ = ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ।੩।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ, (ਕਿ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ (ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਬਣਦਾ)।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਸੁਖ ਮੈ ਆਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੈਠਤ ਰਹਤ ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ ਘੇਰੈ ॥ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪਰੀ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਛਾਡਿਤ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਨੇਰੈ ॥੧॥
ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀਆਂ ਕਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਘੇਰ ਕੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਬਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਦ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਤਿਆਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਆਨਿ = ਆ ਕੇ। ਮਿਲਿ = ਮਿਲ ਕੇ। ਚਹੂ ਦਿਸਿ = ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ। ਰਹਤ ਘੇਰੈ = ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੰਗੁ = ਸਾਥ। ਕੋਊ = ਕੋਈ ਭੀ।੧।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ)! ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ (ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ) ਕਈ ਯਾਰ ਦੋਸਤ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਪਾਸ) ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਘੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ) ਮੁਸੀਬਤ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਫਿਰ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।੧।
ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਤ ਸੰਗ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹੰਸ ਤਜੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੨॥
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਘਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਰਾਜਹੰਸ-ਆਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਭੀ "ਭੂਤ! ਭੂਤ!" ਆਖਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਰਿ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਹਿਤੁ = ਪਿਆਰ। ਜਾ ਸਿਉ = ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ। ਸੰਗਿ = ਨਾਲ {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਸੰਗੁ' ਅਤੇ 'ਸੰਗਿ' ਦਾ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਣਾ}। ਹੰਸ = ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ। ਕਾਂਇਆ = ਸਰੀਰ। ਪ੍ਰੇਤ = ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਚੁਕਾ, ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ। ਕਰਿ = ਆਖ ਕੇ।੨।
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਘਰ ਦੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਭੀ), ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਸਦਾ (ਖਸਮ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਹੀ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪਤੀ ਦਾ) ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਆਖ ਕੇ) ਪਰੇ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ ਮਰ ਚੁਕਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾਇਓ ॥ ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋਊ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥੩॥੧੨॥੧੩੯॥
ਇਹ ਹੈ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਤ-ਵਰਤਾਵੇ ਦਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਖੀਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਲੇ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ = ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ। ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ = ਵਰਤਾਰਾ। ਅੰਤ ਬਾਰ = ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ। ਕਾਮਿ = ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ।੩।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। (ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਮਦਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।੩।੧੨।੧੩੯। ❁ ਸਾਰੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਰਵਾ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ: ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ = ੧੨। ਮਹਲਾ ੩ = ੧੨। ਮਹਲਾ ੪ = ੯। ਮਹਲਾ ੫ = ੯੪। ਮਹਲਾ ੯ = ੧੨। ਕੁਲ ਜੋੜ = ੧੩੯।
