When the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; by washing the body, the mind is not cleansed. This world is deluded by doubt; hardly anyone understands this. || 1 || O my mind, chant the One Name. The True Guru has given me this treasure. || 1 || Pause || Even if one learns the Yogic postures of the Siddhas, and holds his sexual energy in check, still, the filth of the mind is not removed, and the filth of egotism is not eliminated. || 2 || This mind is not controlled by any other discipline, except the Sanctuary of the True Guru. Meeting the True Guru, one is transformed beyond description. || 3 || Prays Nanak, one who dies upon meeting the True Guru, shall be rejuvenated through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
मनि मैलै सभु किछु मैला तनि धोतै मनु हछा न होइ ॥
Man mailai sabẖ kicẖẖ mailā ṯan ḏẖoṯai man hacẖẖā na ho▫e.
When the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; by washing the body, the mind is not cleaned.
ਇਹ ਜਗਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
इह जगतु भरमि भुलाइआ विरला बूझै कोइ ॥१॥
Ih jagaṯ bẖaram bẖulā▫i▫ā virlā būjẖai ko▫e. ||1||
This world is deluded by doubt; how rare are those who understand this. ||1||
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
जपि मन मेरे तू एको नामु ॥
Jap man mere ṯū eko nām.
O my mind, chant the One Name.
ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
सतगुरि दीआ मो कउ एहु निधानु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Saṯgur ḏī▫ā mo ka▫o ehu niḏẖān. ||1|| rahā▫o.
The True Guru has given me this treasure. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਧਾ ਕੇ ਆਸਣ ਜੇ ਸਿਖੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
सिधा के आसण जे सिखै इंद्री वसि करि कमाइ ॥
Siḏẖā ke āsaṇ je sikẖai inḏrī vas kar kamā▫e.
Even if one learns the Yogic postures of the Siddhas, and holds his sexual energy in check,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
मन की मैलु न उतरै हउमै मैलु न जाइ ॥२॥
Man kī mail na uṯrai ha▫umai mail na jā▫e. ||2||
still, the filth of the mind is not removed, and the filth of egotism is not eliminated. ||2||

भणति नानकु सतिगुर कउ मिलदो मरै गुर कै सबदि फिरि जीवै कोइ ॥
Bẖaṇaṯ Nānak saṯgur ka▫o milḏo marai gur kai sabaḏ fir jīvai ko▫e.
Prays Nanak, one who dies upon meeting the True Guru, shall be rejuvenated through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਮਮਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
ममता की मलु उतरै इहु मनु हछा होइ ॥४॥१॥
Mamṯā kī mal uṯrai ih man hacẖẖā ho▫e. ||4||1||
The filth of his attachment and possessiveness shall depart, and his mind shall become pure. ||4||1||

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹ ਜਗਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
ਜਦ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁੱਝ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੈ। ਸ੍ਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ = (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ = ਧੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਜੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ। ਭਰਮਿ = ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ (ਪੈ ਕੇ)।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਮਨ = ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਤਗੁਰਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਮੋ ਕਉ = ਮੈਨੂੰ। ਨਿਧਾਨੁ = ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। ਇਹ (ਨਾਮ-) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਸਿਧਾ ਕੇ ਆਸਣ ਜੇ ਸਿਖੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਸਨ ਸਿਖ ਲਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਵਾਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਖੈ = ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ। ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ = ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ।੨।
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਸਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ, ਜੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ (ਆਸਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਦੀ) ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੨।
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਉਲਟੀ ਭਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
ਬਗੈਰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਆਉਣ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਨ, ਕਹਿਣ ਕਥਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਜਮੁ = ਜਤਨ, ਤਰੀਕਾ। ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ = ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਤਨ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।੩।
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਦੋ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਮਮਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਵੰਝੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਭਣਤਿ = ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਉ = ਨੂੰ। ਮਰੈ = (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ। ਸਬਦਿ = ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ।੪।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਫਿਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੧।

ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
इसु मन कउ होरु संजमु को नाही विणु सतिगुर की सरणाइ ॥
Is man ka▫o hor sanjam ko nāhī viṇ saṯgur kī sarṇā▫e.
This mind is not controlled by any other discipline, except the Sanctuary of the True Guru.

सतगुरि मिलिऐ उलटी भई कहणा किछू न जाइ ॥३॥
Saṯgur mili▫ai ultī bẖa▫ī kahṇā kicẖẖū na jā▫e. ||3||
Meeting the True Guru, one is transformed beyond description. ||3||
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਦੋ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
भणति नानकु सतिगुर कउ मिलदो मरै गुर कै सबदि फिरि जीवै कोइ ॥
Bẖaṇaṯ Nānak saṯgur ka▫o milḏo marai gur kai sabaḏ fir jīvai ko▫e.
Prays Nanak, one who dies upon meeting the True Guru, shall be rejuvenated through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਮਮਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
ममता की मलु उतरै इहु मनु हछा होइ ॥४॥१॥
Mamṯā kī mal uṯrai ih man hacẖẖā ho▫e. ||4||1||
The filth of his attachment and possessiveness shall depart, and his mind shall become pure. ||4||1||

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹ ਜਗਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
ਜਦ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁੱਝ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੈ। ਸ੍ਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਨੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ = (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਲੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਤਨਿ ਧੋਤੈ = ਧੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਜੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ। ਭਰਮਿ = ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ (ਪੈ ਕੇ)।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹੇ (ਤਾਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਮਨ = ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਤਗੁਰਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ। ਮੋ ਕਉ = ਮੈਨੂੰ। ਨਿਧਾਨੁ = ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। ਇਹ (ਨਾਮ-) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਸਿਧਾ ਕੇ ਆਸਣ ਜੇ ਸਿਖੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਸਨ ਸਿਖ ਲਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਵਾਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੀ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਖੈ = ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ। ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ = ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ।੨।
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਸਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ, ਜੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ (ਆਸਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਦੀ) ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੨।
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਉਲਟੀ ਭਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
ਬਗੈਰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਆਉਣ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ। ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਨ, ਕਹਿਣ ਕਥਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਜਮੁ = ਜਤਨ, ਤਰੀਕਾ। ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ = ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਤਨ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।੩।
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਦੋ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਮਮਤਾ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਵੰਝੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਭਣਤਿ = ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਉ = ਨੂੰ। ਮਰੈ = (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ। ਸਬਦਿ = ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ।੪।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਫਿਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੧।
