The First Day: The One Universal Creator is unique, immortal, unborn, beyond social class or involvement. He is inaccessible and unfathomable, with no form or feature. Searching, searching, I have seen Him in each and every heart. I am a sacrifice to one who sees, and inspires others to see Him. By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status. ||1|| Whose Name should I chant, and meditate on, except the Lord of the Universe? Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is revealed within the home of one's own heart. ||1||Pause|| The Second Day: Those who are in love with another, come to regret and repent. The are tied up at Death's door, and continue coming and going. What have they brought, and what will they take with them when they go? The Messenger of Death looms over their heads, and they endure his beating. Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, no one finds release. Practicing hypocrisy, no one finds liberation. ||2|| The True Lord Himself created the universe, joining the elements together. Breaking the cosmic egg, He united, and separated. He made the earth and the sky into places to live. He created day and night, fear and love. The One who created the Creation, also watches over it. There is no other Creator Lord. ||3|| The Third Day: He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the gods, goddesses and various manifestations. The lights and forms cannot be counted. The One who fashioned them, knows their value. He evaluates them, and totally pervades them. Who is close, and who is far away? ||4|| The Fourth Day: He created the four Vedas, the four sources of creation, and distinct forms of speech. He created the eighteen Puraanas, the six Shaastras and the three qualities. He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand. One who overcomes the three qualities, dwells in the fourth state. Prays Nanak, I am his slave. ||5|| The Fifth Day: The five elements are demons. The Lord Himself is unfathomable and detached. Some are gripped by doubt, hunger, emotional attachment and desire. Some taste the sublime essence of the Shabad, and are satisfied. Some are imbued with the Lord's Love, while some die, and are reduced to dust. Some attain the Court and the Mansion of the True Lord, and behold Him, ever-present. ||6|| The false one has no honor or fame; like the black crow, he never becomes pure. He is like the bird, imprisoned in a cage; he paces back and forth behind the bars, but he is not released. He alone is emancipated, whom the Lord and Master emancipates. He follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines devotional worship. ||7|| The Sixth Day: God organized the six systems of Yoga. The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates of itself. If God wills it so, then one is summoned to the Mansion of His Presence. One who is pierced through by the Shabad, obtains honor. Those who wear religious robes burn, and are ruined. Through Truth, the truthful ones merge into the True Lord. ||8|| The Seventh Day: When the body is imbued with Truth and contentment, the seven seas within are filled with the Immaculate Water. Bathing in good conduct, and contemplating the True Lord within the heart, one obtains the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and carries everyone across. With the True Lord in the mind, and the True Lord lovingly on one's lips, one is blessed with the banner of Truth, and meets with no obstructions. ||9|| The Eighth Day: The eight miraculous powers come when one subdues his own mind, and contemplates the True Lord through pure actions. Forget the three qualities of wind, water and fire, and concentrate on the pure True Name. That human who remains lovingly focused on the Lord, prays Nanak, shall not be consumed by death. ||10|| The Ninth Day: the nine masters of Yoga, the nine realms of the earth, and each and every heart, the Name is the supreme almighty Master. This whole world is the child of Maya. I bow in submission to God, my Protector from the very beginning of time. He was in the beginning, He has been throughout the ages, He is now, and He shall always be. He is unlimited, and capable of doing everything. ||11|| The Tenth Day: Meditate on the Naam, give to charity, and purify yourself. Night and day, bathe in spiritual wisdom and the Glorious Virtues of the True Lord. Truth cannot be polluted; doubt and fear run away from it. The flimsy thread breaks in an instant. Know that the world is just like this thread. Your consciousness shall become steady and stable, enjoying the Love of the True Lord. ||12|| The Eleventh Day: Enshrine the One Lord within your heart. Eradicate cruelty, egotism and emotional attachment. Earn the fruitful rewards, by observing the fast of knowing your own self. One who is engrossed in hypocrisy, does not see the true essence. The Lord is immaculate, self-sustaining and unattached. The Pure, True Lord cannot be polluted. ||13|| Wherever I look, I see the One Lord there. He created the other beings, of many and various kinds. Eating only fruits, one loses the fruits of life. Eating only delicacies of various sorts, one loses the true taste. In fraud and greed, people are engrossed and entangled. The Gurmukh is emancipated, practicing Truth. ||14|| The Twelfth Day: One whose mind is not attached to the twelve signs, remains awake day and night, and never sleeps. He remains awake and aware, lovingly centered on the Lord. With faith in the Guru, he is not consumed by death. Those who become detached, and conquer the five enemies - prays Nanak, they are lovingly absorbed in the Lord. ||15|| The Twelfth Day: Know, and practice, compassion and charity. Bring your out-going mind back home. Observe the fast of remaining free of desire. Chant the unchanted Chant of the Naam with your mouth. Know that the One Lord is contained in the three worlds. Purity and self-discipline are all contained in knowing the Truth. ||16|| The Thirteenth Day: He is like a tree on the sea-shore. But his roots can become immortal, if his mind is attuned to the Lord's Love. Then, he will not die of fear or anxiety, and he will never drown. Without the Fear of God, he drowns and dies, and loses his honor. With the Fear of God in his heart, and his heart in the Fear of God, he knows God. He sits on the throne, and becomes pleasing to the Mind of the True Lord. ||17|| The Fourteenth Day: One who enters into the fourth state, overcomes time, and the three qualities of raajas, taamas and satva. Then the sun enters into the house of the moon, and one knows the value of the technology of Yoga. Who is permeating the fourteen worlds, the nether regions of the underworld, the galaxies and solar systems; he remains lovingly focused on that God. ||18|| Amaavas - The Night of the New Moon: The moon is hidden in the sky. O wise one, understand and contemplate the Word of the Shabad. The moon in the sky illuminates the three worlds. Creating the creation, the Creator beholds it. One who sees, through the Guru, merges into Him. The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, coming and going in reincarnation. ||19|| One who establishes his home within his own heart, obtains the most beautiful, permanent place. One comes to understand his own self, when he finds the True Guru. Wherever there is hope, there is destruction and desolation. The bowl of duality and selfishness breaks. He who remains detached amidst the traps of attachment, Prays Nanak, I am the slave of that one. ||20||1||

Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
एकम एकंकारु निराला ॥
Ėkam ekankār nirālā.
The First Day: The One Universal Creator is unique,
ਅਮਰੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
अमरु अजोनी जाति न जाला ॥
Amar ajonī jāṯ na jālā.
immortal, unborn, beyond social class or involvement.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥
अगम अगोचरु रूपु न रेखिआ ॥
Agam agocẖar rūp na rekẖ▫i▫ā.
He is inaccessible and unfathomable, with no form or feature.
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥
खोजत खोजत घटि घटि देखिआ ॥
Kẖojaṯ kẖojaṯ gẖat gẖat ḏekẖi▫ā.
Searching, searching, I have seen Him in each and every heart.
ਜੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
जो देखि दिखावै तिस कउ बलि जाई ॥
Jo ḏekẖ ḏikẖāvai ṯis ka▫o bal jā▫ī.
I am a sacrifice to one who sees, and inspires others to see Him.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
गुर परसादि परम पदु पाई ॥१॥
Gur parsāḏ param paḏ pā▫ī. ||1||
By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status. ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ॥
किआ जपु जापउ बिनु जगदीसै ॥
Ki▫ā jap jāpa▫o bin jagḏīsai.
Whose Name should I chant, and meditate on, except the Lord of the Universe?
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
गुर कै सबदि महलु घरु दीसै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Gur kai sabaḏ mahal gẖar ḏīsai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is revealed within the home of one's own heart. ||1||Pause||
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ॥
दूजै भाइ लगे पछुताणे ॥
Ḏūjai bẖā▫e lage pacẖẖuṯāṇe.
The Second Day: Those who are in love with another, come to regret and repent.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ ॥
जम दरि बाधे आवण जाणे ॥
Jam ḏar bāḏẖe āvaṇ jāṇe.
The are tied up at Death's door, and continue coming and going.
ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਵਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
किआ लै आवहि किआ ले जाहि ॥
Ki▫ā lai āvahi ki▫ā le jāhi.
What have they brought, and what will they take with them when they go?
ਸਿਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
सिरि जमकालु सि चोटा खाहि ॥
Sir jamkāl sė cẖotā kẖāhi.
The Messenger of Death looms over their heads, and they endure his beating.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥
बिनु गुर सबद न छूटसि कोइ ॥
Bin gur sabaḏ na cẖẖūtas ko▫e.
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, no one finds release.
ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
पाखंडि कीन्है मुकति न होइ ॥२॥
Pakẖand kīnĥai mukaṯ na ho▫e. ||2||
Practicing hypocrisy, no one finds liberation. ||2||
ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ॥
आपे सचु कीआ कर जोड़ि ॥
Āpe sacẖ kī▫ā kar joṛ.
The True Lord Himself created the universe, joining the elements together.
ਅੰਡਜ ਫੋੜਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿ ॥
अंडज फोड़ि जोड़ि विछोड़ि ॥
Andaj foṛ joṛ vicẖẖoṛ.
Breaking the cosmic egg, He united, and separated.
ਧਰਤਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਕੀਏ ਬੈਸਣ ਕਉ ਥਾਉ ॥
धरति अकासु कीए बैसण कउ थाउ ॥
Ḏẖaraṯ akās kī▫e baisaṇ ka▫o thā▫o.
He made the earth and the sky into places to live.
ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨੰਤੁ ਕੀਏ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ॥
राति दिनंतु कीए भउ भाउ ॥
Rāṯ ḏinanṯ kī▫e bẖa▫o bẖā▫o.
He created day and night, fear and love.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
जिनि कीए करि वेखणहारा ॥
Jin kī▫e kar vekẖaṇhārā.
The One who created the Creation, also watches over it.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
अवरु न दूजा सिरजणहारा ॥३॥
Avar na ḏūjā sirjaṇhārā. ||3||
There is no other Creator Lord. ||3||
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਾ ॥
त्रितीआ ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसा ॥
Ŧariṯī▫ā barahmā bisan mahesā.
The Third Day: He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva,
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਸਾ ॥
देवी देव उपाए वेसा ॥
Ḏevī ḏev upā▫e vesā.
the gods, goddesses and various manifestations.
ਜੋਤੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
जोती जाती गणत न आवै ॥
Joṯī jāṯī gaṇaṯ na āvai.
The lights and forms cannot be counted.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
जिनि साजी सो कीमति पावै ॥
Jin sājī so kīmaṯ pāvai.
The One who fashioned them, knows their value.
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
कीमति पाइ रहिआ भरपूरि ॥
Kīmaṯ pā▫e rahi▫ā bẖarpūr.
He evaluates them, and totally pervades them.
ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੪॥
किसु नेड़ै किसु आखा दूरि ॥४॥
Kis neṛai kis ākẖā ḏūr. ||4||
Who is close, and who is far away? ||4||
ਚਉਥਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦਾ ॥
चउथि उपाए चारे बेदा ॥
Cẖa▫uth upā▫e cẖāre beḏā.
The Fourth Day: He created the four Vedas,
ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ਬਾਣੀ ਭੇਦਾ ॥
खाणी चारे बाणी भेदा ॥
Kẖāṇī cẖāre baṇī bẖeḏā.
the four sources of creation, and distinct forms of speech.
ਅਸਟ ਦਸਾ ਖਟੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
असट दसा खटु तीनि उपाए ॥
Asat ḏasā kẖat ṯīn upā▫e.
He created the eighteen Puraanas, the six Shaastras and the three qualities.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
सो बूझै जिसु आपि बुझाए ॥
So būjẖai jis āp bujẖā▫e.
He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand.
ਤੀਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
तीनि समावै चउथै वासा ॥
Ŧīn samāvai cẖa▫uthai vāsā.
One who overcomes the three qualities, dwells in the fourth state.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
प्रणवति नानक हम ता के दासा ॥५॥
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak ham ṯā ke ḏāsā. ||5||
Prays Nanak, I am his slave. ||5||
ਪੰਚਮੀ ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
पंचमी पंच भूत बेताला ॥
Pancẖmī pancẖ bẖūṯ beṯālā.
The Fifth Day: The five elements are demons.
ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
आपि अगोचरु पुरखु निराला ॥
Āp agocẖar purakẖ nirālā.
The Lord Himself is unfathomable and detached.
ਇਕਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਖੇ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸੇ ॥
इकि भ्रमि भूखे मोह पिआसे ॥
Ik bẖaram bẖūkẖe moh pi▫āse.
Some are gripped by doubt, hunger, emotional attachment and desire.
ਇਕਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ॥
इकि रसु चाखि सबदि त्रिपतासे ॥
Ik ras cẖākẖ sabaḏ ṯaripṯāse.
Some taste the sublime essence of the Shabad, and are satisfied.
ਇਕਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮਰਿ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
इकि रंगि राते इकि मरि धूरि ॥
Ik rang rāṯe ik mar ḏẖūr.
Some are imbued with the Lord's Love, while some die, and are reduced to dust.
ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੬॥
इकि दरि घरि साचै देखि हदूरि ॥६॥
Ik ḏar gẖar sācẖai ḏekẖ haḏūr. ||6||
Some attain the Court and the Mansion of the True Lord, and behold Him, ever-present. ||6||
ਝੂਠੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
झूठे कउ नाही पति नाउ ॥
Jẖūṯẖe ka▫o nāhī paṯ nā▫o.
The false one has no honor or fame;
ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਕਾਉ ॥
कबहु न सूचा काला काउ ॥
Kabahu na sūcẖā kālā kā▫o.
like the black crow, he never becomes pure.
ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪੰਖੀ ਬੰਧਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥
पिंजरि पंखी बंधिआ कोइ ॥
Pinjar pankẖī banḏẖi▫ā ko▫e.

ਛੇਰੀਂ ਭਰਮੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

He alone is emancipated, whom the Lord and Master emancipates.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੭॥
गुरमति मेले भगति द्रिड़ाए ॥७॥
Gurmaṯ mele bẖagaṯ driṛ▫ā▫e. ||7||
He follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines devotional worship. ||7||
ਖਸਟੀ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਜੇ ॥
खसटी खटु दरसन प्रभ साजे ॥
Kẖastī kẖat ḏarsan parabẖ sāje.

ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਵਾਜੇ ॥
अनहद सबदु निराला वाजे ॥
Anhaḏ sabaḏ nirālā vāje.

ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
जे प्रभ भावै ता महलि बुलावै ॥
Je parabẖ bẖāvai ṯā mahal bulāvai.
If God wills it so, then one is summoned to the Mansion of His Presence.
ਸਬਦੇ ਭੇਦੇ ਤਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
सबदे भेदे तउ पति पावै ॥
Sabḏe bẖeḏe ṯa▫o paṯ pāvai.
One who is pierced through by the Shabad, obtains honor.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਸ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
करि करि वेस खपहि जलि जावहि ॥
Kar kar ves kẖapėh jal jāvėh.
Those who wear religious robes burn, and are ruined.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੮॥
साचै साचे साचि समावहि ॥८॥
Sācẖai sācẖe sācẖ samāvėh. ||8||
Through Truth, the truthful ones merge into the True Lord. ||8||
ਸਪਤਮੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥
सपतमी सतु संतोखु सरीरि ॥
Sapṯamī saṯ sanṯokẖ sarīr.
The Seventh Day: When the body is imbued with Truth and contentment,
ਸਾਤ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਭਰੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨੀਰਿ ॥
सात समुंद भरे निरमल नीरि ॥
Sāṯ samunḏ bẖare nirmal nīr.

ਮਜਨੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
मजनु सीलु सचु रिदै वीचारि ॥

one obtains the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and carries everyone across.
ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਉ ਭਾਇ ॥
मनि साचा मुखि साचउ भाइ ॥
Man sācẖā mukẖ sācẖa▫o bẖā▫e.
With the True Lord in the mind, and the True Lord lovingly on one's lips,
ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੯॥
सचु नीसाणै ठाक न पाइ ॥९॥
Sacẖ nīsāṇai ṯẖāk na pā▫e. ||9||
one is blessed with the banner of Truth, and meets with no obstructions. ||9||
ਅਸਟਮੀ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਾਧੈ ॥
असटमी असट सिधि बुधि साधै ॥
Astamī asat siḏẖ buḏẖ sāḏẖai.
The Eighth Day: The eight miraculous powers come when one subdues his own mind,
ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਰਾਧੈ ॥
सचु निहकेवलु करमि अराधै ॥
Sacẖ nihkeval karam arāḏẖai.
and contemplates the True Lord through pure actions.
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਉ ॥
पउण पाणी अगनी बिसराउ ॥
Pa▫uṇ pāṇī agnī bisrā▫o.
Forget the three qualities of wind, water and fire,
ਤਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
तही निरंजनु साचो नाउ ॥
Ŧahī niranjan sācẖo nā▫o.
and concentrate on the pure True Name.
ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
तिसु महि मनूआ रहिआ लिव लाइ ॥
Ŧis mėh manū▫ā rahi▫ā liv lā▫e.
That human who remains lovingly focused on the Lord,
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
प्रणवति नानकु कालु न खाइ ॥१०॥
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak kāl na kẖā▫e. ||10||
prays Nanak, shall not be consumed by death. ||10||
ਨਾਉ ਨਉਮੀ ਨਵੇ ਨਾਥ ਨਵ ਖੰਡਾ ॥
नाउ नउमी नवे नाथ नव खंडा ॥
Nā▫o na▫umī nave nāth nav kẖanda.
The Ninth Day: the nine masters of Yoga, the nine realms of the earth,
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵੰਡਾ ॥
घटि घटि नाथु महा बलवंडा ॥
Gẖat gẖat nāth mahā balvandā.
and each and every heart, the Name is the supreme almighty Master.
ਆਈ ਪੂਤਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
आई पूता इहु जगु सारा ॥
Ā▫ī pūṯā ih jag sārā.
This whole world is the child of Maya.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਆਦਿ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥
प्रभ आदेसु आदि रखवारा ॥
Parabẖ āḏes āḏ rakẖvārā.
I bow in submission to God, my Protector from the very beginning of time.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
आदि जुगादी है भी होगु ॥
Āḏ jugāḏī hai bẖī hog.
He was in the beginning, He has been throughout the ages, He is now, and He shall always be.
ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੧੧॥
ओहु अपर्मपरु करणै जोगु ॥११॥
Oh aprampar karṇai jog. ||11||
He is unlimited, and capable of doing everything. ||11||
ਦਸਮੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
दसमी नामु दानु इसनानु ॥
Ḏasmī nām ḏān isnān.
The Tenth Day: Meditate on the Naam, give to charity, and purify yourself.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
अनदिनु मजनु सचा गुण गिआनु ॥
An▫ḏin majan sacẖā guṇ gi▫ān.
Night and day, bathe in spiritual wisdom and the Glorious Virtues of the True Lord.
ਸਚਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
सचि मैलु न लागै भ्रमु भउ भागै ॥
Sacẖ mail na lāgai bẖaram bẖa▫o bẖāgai.
Truth cannot be polluted; doubt and fear run away from it.
ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਕਾਚੈ ਤਾਗੈ ॥
बिलमु न तूटसि काचै तागै ॥
Bilam na ṯūtas kācẖai ṯāgai.
The flimsy thread breaks in an instant.
ਜਿਉ ਤਾਗਾ ਜਗੁ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥
जिउ तागा जगु एवै जाणहु ॥
Ji▫o ṯāgā jag evai jāṇhu.
Know that the world is just like this thread.
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣਹੁ ॥੧੨॥
असथिरु चीतु साचि रंगु माणहु ॥१२॥
Asthir cẖīṯ sācẖ rang māṇhu. ||12||
Your consciousness shall become steady and stable, enjoying the Love of the True Lord. ||12||
ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਇਕੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਵੈ ॥
एकादसी इकु रिदै वसावै ॥
Ėkāḏasī ik riḏai vasāvai.
The Eleventh Day: Enshrine the One Lord within your heart.
ਹਿੰਸਾ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
हिंसा ममता मोहु चुकावै ॥
Hinsā mamṯā moh cẖukẖāvai.
Eradicate cruelty, egotism and emotional attachment.
ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨੈ ॥
फलु पावै ब्रतु आतम चीनै ॥
Fal pāvai baraṯ āṯam cẖīnai.
Earn the fruitful rewards, by observing the fast of knowing your own self.
ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨੈ ॥
पाखंडि राचि ततु नही बीनै ॥
Pakẖand rācẖ ṯaṯ nahī bīnai.
One who is engrossed in hypocrisy, does not see the true essence.
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ॥
निरमलु निराहारु निहकेवलु ॥
Nirmal nirāhār nihkeval.
The Lord is immaculate, self-sustaining and unattached.
ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਮਲੁ ॥੧੩॥
सूचै साचे ना लागै मलु ॥१३॥
Sūcẖai sācẖe nā lāgai mal. ||13||
The Pure, True Lord cannot be polluted. ||13||
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੋ ਏਕਾ ॥
जह देखउ तह एको एका ॥
Jah ḏekẖ▫a▫u ṯah eko ekā.
Wherever I look, I see the One Lord there.
ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਕੋ ਵੇਕਾ ॥
होरि जीअ उपाए वेको वेका ॥
Hor jī▫a upā▫e veko vekā.
He created the other beings, of many and various kinds.
ਫਲੋਹਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਫਲੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
फलोहार कीए फलु जाइ ॥
Falohār kī▫e fal jā▫e.
Eating only fruits, one loses the fruits of life.
ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
रस कस खाए सादु गवाइ ॥
Ras kas kẖā▫e sāḏ gavā▫e.
Eating only delicacies of various sorts, one loses the true taste.
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਪਟੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
कूड़ै लालचि लपटै लपटाइ ॥
Kūrhai lālacẖ laptai laptā▫e.
In fraud and greed, people are engrossed and entangled.
ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
छूटै गुरमुखि साचु कमाइ ॥१४॥
Cẖẖūtai gurmukẖ sācẖ kamā▫e. ||14||
The Gurmukh is emancipated, practicing Truth. ||14||
ਦੁਆਦਸਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥
दुआदसि मुद्रा मनु अउधूता ॥
Ḏu▫āḏas muḏrā man a▫uḏẖūṯā.
The Twelfth Day: One whose mind is not attached to the twelve signs,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤਾ ॥
अहिनिसि जागहि कबहि न सूता ॥
Ahinis jāgėh kabėh na sūṯā.
remains awake day and night, and never sleeps.
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
जागतु जागि रहै लिव लाइ ॥
Jāgaṯ jāg rahai liv lā▫e.
He remains awake and aware, lovingly centered on the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
गुर परचै तिसु कालु न खाइ ॥
Gur parcẖai ṯis kāl na kẖā▫e.
With faith in the Guru, he is not consumed by death.
ਅਤੀਤ ਭਏ ਮਾਰੇ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥
अतीत भए मारे बैराई ॥
Aṯīṯ bẖa▫e māre bairā▫ī.
Those who become detached, and conquer the five enemies -
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਹ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
प्रणवति नानक तह लिव लाई ॥१५॥
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak ṯah liv lā▫ī. ||15||
prays Nanak, they are lovingly absorbed in the Lord. ||15||
ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
दुआदसी दइआ दानु करि जाणै ॥
Ḏu▫āḏasī ḏa▫i▫ā ḏān kar jāṇai.
The Twelfth Day: Know, and practice, compassion and charity.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤੋ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥
बाहरि जातो भीतरि आणै ॥
Bāhar jāṯo bẖīṯar āṇai.
Bring your out-going mind back home.
ਬਰਤੀ ਬਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮ ॥
बरती बरत रहै निहकाम ॥
Barṯī baraṯ rahai nihkām.
Observe the fast of remaining free of desire.
ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
अजपा जापु जपै मुखि नाम ॥
Ajpā jāp japai mukẖ nām.
Chant the unchanted Chant of the Naam with your mouth.
ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
तीनि भवण महि एको जाणै ॥
Ŧīn bẖavaṇ mėh eko jāṇai.
Know that the One Lord is contained in the three worlds.
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧੬॥
सभि सुचि संजम साचु पछाणै ॥१६॥
Sabẖ sucẖ sanjam sācẖ pacẖẖāṇai. ||16||
Purity and self-discipline are all contained in knowing the Truth. ||16||
ਤੇਰਸਿ ਤਰਵਰ ਸਮੁਦ ਕਨਾਰੈ ॥
तेरसि तरवर समुद कनारै ॥
Ŧeras ṯarvar samuḏ kanārai.
The Thirteenth Day: He is like a tree on the sea-shore.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਿਖਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
अम्रितु मूलु सिखरि लिव तारै ॥
Amriṯ mūl sikẖar liv ṯārai.
But his roots can become immortal, if his mind is attuned to the Lord's Love.
ਡਰ ਡਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬੂਡੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
डर डरि मरै न बूडै कोइ ॥
Dar dar marai na būdai ko▫e.
Then, he will not die of fear or anxiety, and he will never drown.
ਨਿਡਰੁ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
निडरु बूडि मरै पति खोइ ॥
Nidar būd marai paṯ kẖo▫e.
Without the Fear of God, he drowns and dies, and loses his honor.
ਡਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
डर महि घरु घर महि डरु जाणै ॥
Dar mėh gẖar gẖar mėh dar jāṇai.
With the Fear of God in his heart, and his heart in the Fear of God, he knows God.
ਤਖਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੈ ॥੧੭॥
तखति निवासु सचु मनि भाणै ॥१७॥
Ŧakẖaṯ nivās sacẖ man bẖāṇai. ||17||
He sits on the throne, and becomes pleasing to the Mind of the True Lord. ||17||
ਚਉਦਸਿ ਚਉਥੇ ਥਾਵਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
चउदसि चउथे थावहि लहि पावै ॥
Cẖa▫uḏas cẖa▫uthe thāvėh lėh pāvai.
The Fourteenth Day: One who enters into the fourth state,
ਰਾਜਸ ਤਾਮਸ ਸਤ ਕਾਲ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
राजस तामस सत काल समावै ॥
Rājas ṯāmas saṯ kāl samāvai.
overcomes time, and the three qualities of raajas, taamas and satva.
ਸਸੀਅਰ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
ससीअर कै घरि सूरु समावै ॥
Sasī▫ar kai gẖar sūr samāvai.
Then the sun enters into the house of the moon,
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
जोग जुगति की कीमति पावै ॥
Jog jugaṯ kī kīmaṯ pāvai.
and one knows the value of the technology of Yoga.
ਚਉਦਸਿ ਭਵਨ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
चउदसि भवन पाताल समाए ॥
Cẖa▫uḏas bẖavan pāṯāl samā▫e.
Who is permeating the fourteen worlds, the nether regions of the underworld,
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੧੮॥
खंड ब्रहमंड रहिआ लिव लाए ॥१८॥
Kẖand barahmand rahi▫ā liv lā▫e. ||18||
the galaxies and solar systems; he remains lovingly focused on that God. ||18||
ਅਮਾਵਸਿਆ ਚੰਦੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਗੈਣਾਰਿ ॥
अमावसिआ चंदु गुपतु गैणारि ॥
Amāvasi▫ā cẖanḏ gupaṯ gaiṇār.
Amaavas - The Night of the New Moon: The moon is hidden in the sky.
ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
बूझहु गिआनी सबदु बीचारि ॥
Būjẖhu gi▫ānī sabaḏ bīcẖār.
O wise one, understand and contemplate the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਸੀਅਰੁ ਗਗਨਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ॥
ससीअरु गगनि जोति तिहु लोई ॥
Sasī▫ar gagan joṯ ṯihu lo▫ī.
The moon in the sky illuminates the three worlds.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
करि करि वेखै करता सोई ॥
Kar kar vekẖai karṯā so▫ī.
Creating the creation, the Creator beholds it.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
गुर ते दीसै सो तिस ही माहि ॥
Gur ṯe ḏīsai so ṯis hī māhi.
One who sees, through the Guru, merges into Him.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧੯॥
मनमुखि भूले आवहि जाहि ॥१९॥
Manmukẖ bẖūle āvahi jāhi. ||19||
The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, coming and going in reincarnation. ||19||
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
घरु दरु थापि थिरु थानि सुहावै ॥
Gẖar ḏar thāp thir thān suhāvai.
One who establishes his home within his own heart, obtains the most beautiful, permanent place.
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
आपु पछाणै जा सतिगुरु पावै ॥
Āp pacẖẖāṇai jā saṯgur pāvai.
One comes to understand his own self, when he finds the True Guru.
ਜਹ ਆਸਾ ਤਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
जह आसा तह बिनसि बिनासा ॥
Jah āsā ṯah binas bināsā.
Wherever there is hope, there is destruction and desolation.
ਫੂਟੈ ਖਪਰੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਨਸਾ ॥
फूटै खपरु दुबिधा मनसा ॥
Fūtai kẖapar ḏubiḏẖā mansā.
The bowl of duality and selfishness breaks.
ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
ममता जाल ते रहै उदासा ॥
Mamṯā jāl ṯe rahai uḏāsā.
He who remains detached amidst the traps of attachment,
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੨੦॥੧॥
प्रणवति नानक हम ता के दासा ॥२०॥१॥
Paraṇvaṯ Nānak ham ṯā ke ḏāsā. ||20||1||
Prays Nanak, I am the slave of that one. ||20||1||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਥਿਤੀ ਘਰੁ ੧੦ ਜਤਿ
ਬਿਲਾਵਲ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।

ਰਾਗ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ, ਘਰ ੧੦ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ 'ਥਿਤੀ', ਜਤਿ ਦੀ ਤਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਗਾਵਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਲਾ ॥ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥ ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
ਪਹਿਲੀ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲਾਸਾਨੀ, ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ, ਅਜਨਮਾ, ਅਤੇ ਵਰਨ ਤੇ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਚ ਤੋਂ ਉਚੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਜਾਂ ਨੁਹਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ। ਲੱਭਦਿਆਂ, ਲੱਭਦਿਆਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਉਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਸਦਕਾ ਮੈਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਰਤਬਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਥਿਤੀ = ਥਿਤਾਂ (ਬਹੁ-ਵਚਨ 'ਥਿਤਿ' ਤੋਂ)। ਥਿਤਿ = {थिति = A Lunar day} ਚੰਦ ਦੇ ਘਟਣ ਵਧਣ ਦੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ {ਨੋਟ: ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਦ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਗਾਂਹ ਨਵਾਂ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ = ਵਦੀ ਏਕਮ ਦੂਜ ਤੀਜ ਆਦਿਕ}। ਜਤਿ = ਜੋੜੀ ਵਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਗਤ। ਏਕਮ = ਚੰਦ ਦੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਤਾਰੀਖ਼। ਨਿਰਾਲਾ = {निर्-आलय} ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ। ਜਾਲਾ = ਜਾਲ, ਬੰਧਨ। ਅਗਮ = ਅਪਹੁੰਚ। ਅਗੋਚਰੁ = {ਅ-ਗੋ-ਚਰੁ। ਗੋ = ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ। ਚਰੁ = ਪਹੁੰਚ} ਜਿਸ ਤਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ। ਰੂਪੁ = ਸ਼ਕਲ। ਰੇਖਿਆ = ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ। ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ = ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ। ਜੋ = ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਗੁਰੂ)। ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ = ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ = ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ। ਪਾਈ = ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪਰਸਾਦਿ = ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ। ਤਿਸ ਕਉ = {ਸੰਬੰਧਕ 'ਕਉ' ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਤਿਸੁ' ਦਾ ੁ ਉੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ}।੧।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ)। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ (ਵਿਆਪਦਾ)। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ। ਪਰ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੇਖ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਹੜਾ (ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ) ਉੱਚੀ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧।
ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਲਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਾਂ? ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਦਿਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ = ਹੋਰ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਜਪ? ਜਾਪਉ = ਜਾਪਉਂ, ਮੈਂ ਜਪਾਂ। ਜਗਦੀਸ = {ਜਗਤ-ਈਸ} ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ। ਸਬਦਿ = ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ। ਮਹਲੁ = ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ। ਦੀਸੈ = ਦਿੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਦਰ-ਘਰ ਦਿੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ॥ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ ॥ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਵਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
ਦੂਜੀ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਜੋ ਹੋਰਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਓੜਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਸਚਾਤਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਯਮ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਕੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਲੈ ਜਾਣਗੇ? ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਬੰਦ-ਖਲਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਦੰਭ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਭਾਇ = ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ। ਭਾਉ = ਪ੍ਰੇਮ। ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ = (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ। ਜਮ ਦਰਿ = ਜਮ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ। ਬਾਧੇ = ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ। ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੇ = ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ। ਕਿਆ ਲੈ = ਕੀਹ ਲੈ ਕੇ? ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ। ਜਾਹਿ = ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਿਰਿ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ। ਜਮਕਾਲੁ = ਮੌਤ, ਜਮਰਾਜ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ। ਸਿ = ਅਜਿਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ। ਖਾਹਿ = ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ = ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਕੋਇ = ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ। ਪਾਖੰਡਿ = ਪਖੰਡ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ = ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਖੰਡ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਪਖੰਡ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ। ਮੁਕਤਿ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ।੨।
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਥੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਨਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ)। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਖੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਉਹ (ਨਿੱਤ ਇਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਖੰਡ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਬਣਾਇਆਂ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ।੨।
ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਆ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ॥ ਅੰਡਜ ਫੋੜਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿ ॥ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਕੀਏ ਬੈਸਣ ਕਉ ਥਾਉ ॥ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨੰਤੁ ਕੀਏ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਰਚ ਕੇ, ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ, ਸਾਈਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਟਿਕਾ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਜਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਸਣ ਲਈ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਰਾਤ, ਦਿਨ, ਡਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ। ਆਲਮ ਦਾ ਰਚਣਹਾਰ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਸਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ = (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ ਹੀ। ਸਚੁ = ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਕੀਆ = (ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕਰ = ਹੱਥ {ਬਹੁ-ਵਚਨ}। ਜੋੜਿ = ਜੋੜ ਕੇ। ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ = ਹੱਥ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, ਹੱਥ ਹਿਲਾ ਕੇ, ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਅੰਡਜ = ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂਡ। ਫੋੜਿ = ਤੋੜ ਕੇ, ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਜੋੜਿ = ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, (ਫਿਰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਵਿਛੋੜਿ = ਵਿਛੋੜ ਕੇ, ਤੋੜ ਕੇ, ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਕੀਏ = ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ। ਬੈਸਣ ਕਉ = ਬੈਠਣ ਲਈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਵੱਸਣ ਲਈ। ਦਿਨੰਤੁ = ਦਿਨ। ਭਉ = ਡਰ। ਭਾਉ = ਪਿਆਰ। ਜਿਨਿ = ਜਿਸ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨੇ। ਕਰਿ = (ਪੈਦਾ) ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਅਵਰੁ = (ਕੋਈ) ਹੋਰ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂਡ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂਡ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ, (ਫਿਰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ, (ਫਿਰ) ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਫਿਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਹ) ਧਰਤੀ (ਅਤੇ) ਆਕਾਸ਼ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਥਾਂ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ। (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਦਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਡਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ (ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ)। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨੇ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ (ਇਸ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂਡ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।੩।
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਾ ॥ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਸਾ ॥ ਜੋਤੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੪॥
ਤੀਜੀ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ, ਸ਼ਿਵਜੀ, ਦੇਵੀਆਂ, ਦੇਵਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਰੂਪ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਗਿਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰੀਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਕਹਾਂ?
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ = ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਤੀਜਾ ਦਿਨ। ਮਹੇਸਾ = ਸ਼ਿਵ। ਉਪਾਏ = ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ। ਵੇਸਾ = ਵੇਸ, ਸਰੂਪ। ਜੋਤਿ = ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਚਾਨਣ। ਜਾਤੀ = ਜਾਤਿ, ਹਸਤੀ। ਜਿਨਿ = ਜਿਸ (ਕਰਤਾਰ) ਨੇ। ਸੋ = ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ। ਕੀਮਤਿ = ਕਦਰ, ਮੁੱਲ। ਆਖਾ = ਆਖਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਆਖਾਂ।੪।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ। ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਇਤਨੀਆਂ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਹੀ) ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ) ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਕੀਹ ਦੱਸਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਨੇੜੇ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਸਮਾਨ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ)।੪।
ਚਉਥਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦਾ ॥ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ਬਾਣੀ ਭੇਦਾ ॥ ਅਸਟ ਦਸਾ ਖਟੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥ ਤੀਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
ਚੌਥੀ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ, ਚਾਰੇ ਉਤਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਤੇ ਬੋਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਫਰਕ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ (ਪੁਰਾਣ), ਛੇ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ) ਅਤੇ ਤਿੰਨ (ਗੁਣ) ਰਚੇ ਹਨ। ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਅਵਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਥੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਬਿਨੈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਚਉਥਿ = ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਚੌਥੇ ਦਿਨ। ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ = ਰਿਗ, ਜਜੁਰ, ਸਾਮ, ਅਥਰਬਨ। ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ = ਜਗਤ-ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਖਾਣਾਂ (ਅੰਡਜ, ਜੇਰਜ, ਉਤਭੁਜ, ਸੇਤਜ)। ਬਾਣੀ ਭੇਦਾ = ਵਖ ਵਖ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ। ਅਸਟ = ਅੱਠ। ਅਸਟ ਦਸਾ = (ਅੱਠ ਤੇ ਦਸ) ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ। ਖਟੁ = ਛੇ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ) {ਸਾਂਖ, ਜੋਗ, ਨਿਆਇ, ਵੈਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਿਕ, ਮੀਮਾਂਸਾ, ਵੇਦਾਂਤ}। ਤੀਨਿ = (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ (ਰਜੋ, ਸਤੋ, ਤਮੋ)। ਸਮਾਵੈ = ਮੁਕਾ ਲਏ। ਚਉਥੈ = ਚੌਥੇ (ਪਦ) ਵਿਚ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ। ਤਾ ਕੇ = ਉਸ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਦੇ।੫।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ-ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ) ਚਾਰ ਖਾਣਾਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਠਾਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨ (ਗੁਣ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੫।
ਪੰਚਮੀ ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥ ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਖੇ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸੇ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮਰਿ ਧੂਰਿ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੬॥
ਪੰਜਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨਿਰੇ ਪੁਰੇ ਭੂਤਨੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਖੁਦ ਅਗਾਧ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ। ਕਈ ਸੰਦੇਹ, ਭੁੱਖ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਲਗਨ ਅਤੇ ਤਰੇਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਗਲਤਾਨ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਰੱਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਜਰ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ = ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤ ਜੀਵ। ਬੇਤਾਲਾ = ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਚ ਤੋਂ, ਤਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ, ਭੂਤਨੇ। ਅਗੋਚਰੁ = {ਅ-ਗੋ-ਚਰੁ। ਗੋ = ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ। ਚਰੁ = ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ} ਜਿਸ ਤਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਾਹ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ। ਨਿਰਾਲਾ = {ਨਿਰ-ਆਲਯ} ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਇੱਕ ਸਰੀਰ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਿਰਲੇਪ। ਇਕਿ = {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਇਕ' ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁ-ਵਚਨ} ਕਈ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ। ਭ੍ਰਮਿ = ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ। ਭੂਖੇ = ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ, ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਮਾਰੇ। ਰਸੁ = ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ। ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ = ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜੇ ਹੋਏ। ਰਾਤੇ = ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ, ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ। ਮਰਿ = (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ) ਮਰ ਕੇ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ। ਧੂਰਿ = ਮਿੱਟੀ। ਦਰਿ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ। ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ। ਦੇਖਿ = ਵੇਖ ਕੇ।੬।
ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ (-ਪੁਰਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਿਰਤ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਚ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। (ਅਜਿਹੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅਧੀਨ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਕਈ ਐਸੇ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇਕ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋਏ ਪਏ ਹਨ (ਜੀਵਨ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਗਵਾ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ)। ਇਕ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੬।
ਝੂਠੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਕਾਉ ॥ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪੰਖੀ ਬੰਧਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਛੇਰੀਂ ਭਰਮੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਤਉ ਛੂਟੈ ਜਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਛਡਾਏ ॥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੭॥
ਕੂੜੇ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮਵਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਸਿਆਹ ਕੱਵਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਉਹ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੱਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੰਛੀ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ (ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੀਖਾਂ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਕੇਵਲ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਖਲਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਸੁਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਕੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਝੂਠਾ = ਕੂੜ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ। ਪਤਿ = ਇੱਜ਼ਤ। ਨਾਉ = ਨਾਮਣਾ, ਇੱਜ਼ਤ। ਸੂਚਾ = ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ। ਪਿੰਜਰਿ = ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚ। ਬੰਧਿਆ = ਕੈਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ਛੇਰੀਂ = ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਰਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ। ਭਰਮੈ = ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੁਕਤਿ = ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ। ਤਉ = ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ। ਖਸਮੁ = ਮਾਲਕ। ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ = ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੭।
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਕੋਈ ਪੰਛੀ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੈਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਉਹ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਰਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ) ਪਿਆ ਭਟਕੇ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇਵੇ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਕੈਦ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੭।
ਖਸਟੀ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਜੇ ॥ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਵਾਜੇ ॥ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥ ਸਬਦੇ ਭੇਦੇ ਤਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਸ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੮॥
ਛੇਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ। ਹੱਦਬੰਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਨਿਵੇਕਲਾ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਦ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਦ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਬਾਣੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੱਚ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਸੱਚੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਖਸਟੀ = ਖਸਟਮੀ, ਛੇਵੀਂ ਥਿਤ। ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ = ਛੇ ਭੇਖ (ਜੋਗੀ, ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ, ਜੰਗਮ, ਬੋਧੀ, ਸਰੇਵੜੇ, ਬੈਰਾਗੀ)। ਪ੍ਰਭ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ। ਅਨਹਦ = ਇਕ-ਰਸ, ਬਿਨਾ ਵਜਾਏ ਵੱਜਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਸਬਦੁ = ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਧੁਨਿ। ਨਿਰਾਲਾ = ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ, (ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਤੋਂ) ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ। ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆ ਜਾਏ। ਮਹਲਿ = ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ। ਸਬਦੇ = ਸਬਦਿ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ। ਭੇਦੇ = ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਏ, ਮੋਹਿਤ ਕਰ ਲਏ। ਤਉ = ਤਦੋਂ। ਪਤਿ = ਇੱਜ਼ਤ। ਵੇਸ = ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ। ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ = ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਚੈ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ। ਸਾਚੇ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ। ਸਾਚਿ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ।੮।
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਆਦਿਕ) ਛੇ ਭੇਖ ਬਣਾਏ ਗਏ, ਪਰ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (-ਵਾਜਾ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਕੋਈ ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ) ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰੋ ਲਏ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਭੇਖੀ ਸਾਧ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਖਪਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੮।
ਸਪਤਮੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥ ਸਾਤ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਭਰੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨੀਰਿ ॥ ਮਜਨੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਉ ਭਾਇ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੯॥
ਸਪਤਮੀ (ਸੱਤਵੀਂ ਤਿੱਥ): ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਕਦਾਮਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਦ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਰੀਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੋ ਉਤਮ ਆਚਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ।
ਸਰੀਰਿ = (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ। ਸਚੁ = ਦਾਨ, ਸੇਵਾ। ਸਾਤ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ = ਪੰਜ ਗਿਆਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ, ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬੁਧਿ। ਨੀਰਿ = (ਨਾਮ-) ਜਲ ਨਾਲ। ਸੀਲੁ = ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ। ਮਜਨੁ = ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ। ਸਚੁ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਵੀਚਾਰਿ = ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ, ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ। ਸਬਦਿ = ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਿ = ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਭਿ = ਸਾਰੇ ਸੱਤ ਸਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ। ਮਨਿ = ਮਨ ਵਿਚ। ਮੁਖਿ = ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ। ਸਾਚਉ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਭਾਇ = ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ। ਸਚੁ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ। ਨੀਸਾਣੈ = ਨੀਸਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ, ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ।੯।
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ (ਪਲ੍ਹਰਦੇ) ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ, ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਚਰਨ-ਰੂਪ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਵ, ਪੰਜੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ, ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ) ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।੯।
ਅਸਟਮੀ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਾਧੈ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਰਾਧੈ ॥ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਉ ॥ ਤਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
ਅੱਠਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਉਹ ਅੱਠ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਦਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਜੋ, ਸਤੋ ਅਤੇ ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਉਂ ਵਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹੇ, ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ।
ਅਸਟ = ਅੱਠ। ਅਸਟਮੀ = ਅੱਠਵੀਂ। ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ = ਅੱਠ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ {ਅਣਿਮਾ, ਮਹਿਮਾ, ਲਘਿਮਾ, ਗਰਿਮਾ, ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ, ਪ੍ਰਾਕਾਮ੍ਯ, ਈਸ਼ਿਤਾ, ਵਸ਼ਿਤਾ}। ਬੁਧਿ = ਅਕਲ। ਸਾਧੈ = ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਚੁ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ = {निष्कैवल्य} ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ। ਕਰਮਿ = (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ। ਅਰਾਧੈ = ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਉਣ = ਰਜੋ ਗੁਣ। ਪਾਣੀ = ਸਤੋ ਗੁਣ। ਅਗਨੀ = ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣ। ਬਿਸਰਾਉ = ਅਭਾਵ। ਤਹੀ = ਉਸ ਥਾਂ, ਉਸੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ = ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ। ਸਾਚੋ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ। ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ = ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ। ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ = ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਾਲੁ = ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ।੧੦।
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ) ਅੱਠ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਰਜੋ ਸਤੋ ਅਤੇ ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਾਵ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ)।੧੦।
ਨਾਉ ਨਉਮੀ ਨਵੇ ਨਾਥ ਨਵ ਖੰਡਾ ॥ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਲਵੰਡਾ ॥ ਆਈ ਪੂਤਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਆਦਿ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥ ਓਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੧੧॥
ਨਾਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਨੌ ਵੱਡੇ ਯੋਗੀਆਂ, ਨੌ ਖਿਤਿਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਮ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਔਲਾਦ (ਪਸਾਰਾ) ਹੈ। ਮੇਰੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ, ਜੋ ਐਨ ਆਰੰਭ ਤੋਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਰੱਖਿਅਕ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਰੰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੇ ਯੁੱਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ, ਹੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਨਵੇ ਨਾਥ = ਨੌਂਹੀ ਨਾਥ, ਸਾਰੇ ਨੌ ਨਾਥ (ਆਦਿ ਨਾਥ, ਮਛੇਂਦਰ ਨਾਥ, ਉਦਯ ਨਾਥ, ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਾਥ, ਕੰਥੜ ਨਾਥ, ਸਤ੍ਯ ਨਾਥ, ਅਚੰਭ ਨਾਥ, ਚੌਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਥ, ਗੋਰਖ ਨਾਥ)। ਨਾਥ = ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਹੰਤ। ਨਵ ਖੰਡ = ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਨੌ ਹਿੱਸੇ, ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵ। ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ = ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਆਪਕ)। ਬਲਵੰਡ = ਬਲੀ। ਮਾਈ = ਮਾਇਆ, ਮਾਂ। ਆਦੇਸੁ = ਨਮਸਕਾਰ। ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਦੇਸੁ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ। ਜੁਗਾਦੀ = ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ। ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ = ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ। ਜੋਗੁ = ਸਮਰੱਥ।੧੧।
(ਅਸਲ) ਨਾਥ (ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਹਾ ਬਲੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਹੀ ਨਾਥ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਉਹ ਨਾਥ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਹੈ) ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਉਸ ਮਾਂ (-ਨਾਥ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੈ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ)। ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਦਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ, ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਰਹੇਗਾ। ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਥ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ) ਉਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੧।
ਦਸਮੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ ਸਚਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਕਾਚੈ ਤਾਗੈ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਤਾਗਾ ਜਗੁ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣਹੁ ॥੧੨॥
ਦੱਸਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰ, ਵੰਡ ਕੇ ਛਕ, ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕ-ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਰਹੁ। ਰਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ। ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਗਿਲਾਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਅਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਕੱਚੇ ਧਾਗੇ ਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਣ ਨੂੰ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੱਚੀ ਤੰਦ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਏਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ। ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ = ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼, ਸਦਾ। ਮਜਨੁ = ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ। ਸਚਾ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ। ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ = ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ। ਸਚਿ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜਿਆਂ)। ਭ੍ਰਮੁ = ਭਟਕਣਾ। ਬਿਲਮੁ = ਦੇਰ, ਢਿੱਲ। ਅਸਥਿਰੁ = ਟਿਕਵਾਂ। ਸਾਚਿ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ।੧੨।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਥਿਤ ਤੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਉਂ ਤੁਰਤ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਕੱਚੇ ਧਾਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਟੁੱਟਦਿਆਂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਗਤ (ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ) ਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਸਮਝੋ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੱਚਾ ਧਾਗਾ ਹੈ; ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖੋ, ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣੋ।੧੨।
ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਇਕੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਵੈ ॥ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬ੍ਰਤੁ ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨੈ ॥ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨੈ ॥ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੁ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ॥ ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਮਲੁ ॥੧੩॥
ਗਿਆਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਉਣਾ, ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਦਈਪੁਣਾ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਲਗਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਣਾ ਉਚਿਤ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦਾ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੰਭ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਚਤ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ। ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਵੈ-ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਲੀਣਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਿਮੜਦੀ।
ਇਕ = ਇੱਕ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨੂੰ। ਰਿਦੈ = ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਵਸਾਵੈ = ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਿੰਸਾ = ਨਿਰਦਇਤਾ। ਮਮਤਾ = ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ। ਚੁਕਾਵੈ = ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨੈ = ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਾਖੰਡਿ = ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਵਿਚ। ਰਾਇ = ਰਚ ਕੇ, ਰੁੱਝ ਕੇ। ਤਤੁ = ਅਸਲੀਅਤ। ਬੀਨੈ = ਵੇਖਦਾ, ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ। ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰੁ = {ਨਿਰ-ਆਹਾਰੁ} ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ। ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ = {निष्कैवल्य} ਸੁੱਧ ਸਰੂਪ। ਸੂਚੈ = ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ। ਸਾਚੇ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ। ਏਕਾਦਸੀ = ਚੰਦ ਦੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ ਜਾਂ ਮੱਸਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆਰ੍ਹਵਾਂ ਦਿਨ। ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਿਰਾਹਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੩।
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਨਿਰਦਇਤਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਹ) ਵਰਤ (ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਵਰਤ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਫਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਸਦਾ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ (ਦੇ ਵਰਤ) ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ (ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਤ-ਧਾਰੀ ਹੈ), ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸੁੱਧ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਵੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।੧੩।
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੋ ਏਕਾ ॥ ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ਵੇਕੋ ਵੇਕਾ ॥ ਫਲੋਹਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਫਲੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਪਟੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਸ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਹੋਰ ਜੀਵ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਕੇਵਲ ਫਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਖਾਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੇਵਲ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਭਾਂਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਆਮਤਾਂ ਮਾਨਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਝੂਠੇ ਲੋਭ ਅੰਦਰ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਚਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਹ = ਜਿੱਥੇ। ਦੇਖਉ = ਦੇਖਉਂ, ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਤਹ = ਉਥੇ। ਏਕੋ ਏਕਾ = ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ। ਹੋਰਿ = {ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਹੋਰ' ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁ-ਵਚਨ}। ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਅ = ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ। ਵੇਕੋ ਵੇਕਾ = ਭਾਂਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਦੇ। ਫਲੋਹਾਰ = ਫਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਹਾਰ {ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਦੇ ਵਰਤ ਤੇ ਅੰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਫਲ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਤਨੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਰਤ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਸਲ ਵਰਤ ਹੈ 'ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਹੇਜ਼', ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਹੈ 'ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ'}। ਰਸ ਕਸ = ਕਈ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਫਲ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ। ਸਾਦੁ = ਸੁਆਦ, ਮਜ਼ਾ। ਲਾਲਚਿ = ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ। ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚ = ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ। ਲਪਟੈ = ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਛੂਟੈ = (ਲਾਲਚ ਤੋਂ) ਮੁਕਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਸਾਚ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ।੧੪।
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਧਰ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਭਾਂਤ ਭਾਂਤ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਵਰਤ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਈ ਭਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਅੰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਨਿਰੇ ਫਲ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ (ਵਰਤ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ) ਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ (ਅਸਲ ਵਰਤ ਹੈ 'ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਹੇਜ਼', ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਹੈ 'ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ')। (ਅੰਨ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਕਈ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਫਲ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਉਂਞ ਹੀ ਵਰਤ ਦਾ) ਮਜ਼ਾ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਰਤ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੪।
ਦੁਆਦਸਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤਾ ॥ ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥ ਅਤੀਤ ਭਏ ਮਾਰੇ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਹ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਖਬਰਦਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕਦਾਚਿੱਤ ਸੌਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਹੱੜਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ। ਜੋ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਸੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ; ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਬਿਨੈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਮਾਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਆਦਸਿ = ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਥਿਤਿ, ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸੀ ਜਾਂ ਮੱਸਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵਾਂ ਦਿਨ। ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ = ਮੁਹਰ, ਛਾਪ, ਭੇਖ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ। ਦੁਆਦਸਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ = ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ {ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ=ਜਨੇਊ, ਮ੍ਰਿਗਛਾਲਾ, ਮੁੰਞ ਦੀ ਤੜਾਗੀ, ਕਰਮੰਡਲ, ਸ਼ਿਖਾ। ਵੈਸ਼ਨਵ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ=ਤਿਲਕ, ਕੰਠੀ, ਤੁਲਸੀ ਮਾਲਾ। ਸ਼ੈਵ (ਸ਼ਿਵ-ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ) ਦੇ ਦੋ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ=ਰੁਦ੍ਰਾਖ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ, ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁੰਡ੍ਰ (ਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਈਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਲਕੀਰਾਂ)। ਜੋਗੀ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ=ਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ। ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ=ਤ੍ਰਿਦੰਡ। (੫+੩+੨+੧+੧=੧੨) ਦੁਆਦਸਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ = ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਛਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਹੈ। ਅਉਧੂਤਾ = ਤਿਆਗੀ। ਅਹਿ = ਦਿਨ। ਨਿਸਿ = ਰਾਤ। ਜਾਗਹਿ = ਜਾਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਾਗਿ = ਜਾਗ ਕੇ। ਲਿਵ = ਸੁਰਤਿ। ਲਾਇ ਰਹੈ = ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ = ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ। ਕਾਲੁ = ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ। ਅਤੀਤ = ਵਿਰਕਤ। ਬੈਰਾਈ = (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਵੈਰੀ। ਤਹ = ਉਥੇ, ਉਸ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ।੧੫।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੌਂਦੇ, (ਉਹੀ ਹਨ ਅਸਲ) ਤਿਆਗੀ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੇ) ਬਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਜਾਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ ਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ) ਉਥੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਸਾਰੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਏ, ਉਹ (ਅਸਲ) ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਗਏ।੧੫।
ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤੋ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥ ਬਰਤੀ ਬਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮ ॥ ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮ ॥ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧੬॥
ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਖੈਰਾਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਜਾਨਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੂਏ ਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ ਉਚਿਤ ਹੈ। ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਵਰਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਵਾਰਥ ਰਹਿਤ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਚਾਰਨ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਉਚਿਤ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਇਕ ਸਾਈਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ਗਾਰੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਨਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਆਦਸੀ = ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਥਿਤਿ। ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ = ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ = ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦਇਆ = ਪਿਆਰ। ਜਾਤੋ = ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਭਟਕਦਾ। ਆਣੈ = ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਰਤੀ ਬਰਤ = ਵਰਤਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਵਰਤ। ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ = ਵਾਸਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ। ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ = ਜਪਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਕਿਸੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ) ਜਾਪ। ਮੁਖਿ = ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ। ਜਪੈ = ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ = ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ। ਏਕੋ = ਇਕ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨੂੰ ਹੀ। ਸਭਿ = ਸਾਰੇ। ਸੰਜਮ = ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ। ਸੁਚਿ = ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਉੱਦਮ। ਸਾਚੁ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਪਛਾਣੇ = ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੬।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਰਤ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਮੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਪਿਆਰ ਵੰਡਣਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।੧੬।
ਤੇਰਸਿ ਤਰਵਰ ਸਮੁਦ ਕਨਾਰੈ ॥ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਿਖਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰੈ ॥ ਡਰ ਡਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬੂਡੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਿਡਰੁ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥ ਡਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ ਤਖਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੈ ॥੧੭॥
ਤੇਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਦੇ ਬਿਰਛ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਅਮਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ, ਜੇਕਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਡੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੇ। ਤਦ ਉਹ ਭੈ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਡੁੱਬ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਬਰੂ ਗੁਆ ਬਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਤੇ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰਸਿ = ਤੇਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਥਿਤਿ। ਕਨਾਰੈ = ਕੰਢੇ ਤੇ। ਤਰਵਰ = ਰੁੱਖ। ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ = ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ। ਮੂਲੁ = ਮੁੱਢ, ਜੜ੍ਹ। ਸਿਖਰਿ = ਸਿਖਰ ਤੇ। ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰੈ = ਲਿਵ ਦੀ ਤਾਰ ਵਿਚ। ਡਰ = (ਸੰਸਾਰਕ) ਡਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ। ਡਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ = ਡਰ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ। ਨ ਬੂਡੈ = ਨਹੀਂ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ। ਨਿਡਰੁ = (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਬੂਡਿ = (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਕੇ। ਮਰੈ = ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਤਿ = ਇੱਜ਼ਤ। ਖੋਇ = ਗਵਾ ਕੇ। ਘਰੁ = ਟਿਕਾਣਾ। ਘਰ ਮਹਿ = ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ। ਜਾਣੈ = (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਖਤਿ = ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉੱਤੇ। ਸਚੁ = ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ। ਮਨਿ = ਮਨ ਵਿਚ। ਭਾਵੈ = ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੭।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਉੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ (ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਜੜ੍ਹ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉੱਕੀ) ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੀ ਡੋਰ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਿਖਰ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ)। (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰਕ) ਡਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡਰ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ। (ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਅਦਬ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰੱਬੀ) ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੭।
ਚਉਦਸਿ ਚਉਥੇ ਥਾਵਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਰਾਜਸ ਤਾਮਸ ਸਤ ਕਾਲ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਚਉਦਸਿ ਭਵਨ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੧੮॥
ਚੌਧਵੀਂ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਜਿਹੜਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਚੌਥੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ (ਅਵਸਥਾ) ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਰਜੋ, ਤਮੋ ਤੇ ਸਤੋ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਵਕਤ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਦੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਦੇ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਦੇ ਧਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਾਖਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਵਿਧੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਵਿਚ ਚੌਦਾ ਪੁਰੀਆਂ, ਪਇਅਲ, ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਉਦਸਿ = ਪੂਰਨਮਾਸ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਚੌਧਵਾਂ ਦਿਨ। ਚਉਥੇ ਥਾਵਹਿ = ਚੌਥੇ ਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ, ਤੁਰੀਆਵਸਥਾ। ਲਹਿ ਪਾਵੈ = ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰਾਜਸ ਤਾਮਸ ਸਤ = ਰਜੋ ਗੁਣ, ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣ, ਸਤੋ ਗੁਣ। ਕਾਲ = ਸਮਾ। ਸਮਾਵੈ = ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਸੀਅਰ = ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ। ਕੈ ਘਰਿ = ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ। ਸਸੀਅਰ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ = ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ। ਸੂਰੁ = ਸੂਰਜ, ਤਪਸ਼, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਤਪਸ਼। ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ। ਕੀਮਤਿ = ਕਦਰ, ਸਾਰ। ਚਉਦਸਿ ਭਵਨ = ਚੌਦਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ। ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ = ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੮।
(ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਤੁਰੀਆ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਰਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣ ਸਤੋ ਗੁਣ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਗੁਣ ਉਸ ਚੌਥੇ ਪਦ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਤਪਸ਼ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚੌਦਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਤਾਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।੧੮।
ਅਮਾਵਸਿਆ ਚੰਦੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਗੈਣਾਰਿ ॥ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਸਸੀਅਰੁ ਗਗਨਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧੯॥
ਮੱਸਿਆ: ਉਸ ਰਾਤ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ। ਜਦ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਜਹਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ, ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕੂਲ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਪਤੁ = ਲੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ। ਗੈਣਾਰਿ = ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ। ਬੀਚਾਰਿ = ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ। ਗਿਆਨੀ = ਹੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦੇ ਖੋਜੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਸਸੀਅਰੁ = ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ। ਗਗਨਿ = ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ। ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ = ਤਿੰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਤਿੰਨ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ। ਕਰਿ = ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਵੇਖੈ = ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ = ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੀ। ਤੇ = ਤੋਂ, ਪਾਸੋਂ। ਦੀਸੈ = ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੋ = ਉਹ (ਮਨੁੱਖ)। ਤਿਸ ਹੀ = {ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣ 'ਹੀ' ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ 'ਤਿਸੁ' ਦਾ ੁ ਉੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ}। ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ = ਉਸ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਵਿਚ ਹੀ। ਮਨਮੁਖਿ = ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਆਵਹਿ = ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਾਹਿ = ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੯।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਮੱਸਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਦ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਪਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਪਤ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)। ਹੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦੇ ਖੋਜੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ (ਹੀ ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝ ਸਕੋਗੇ। (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਜੋਤਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ)। ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੯।
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਜਹ ਆਸਾ ਤਹ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥ ਫੂਟੈ ਖਪਰੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਨਸਾ ॥ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੨੦॥੧॥
ਜੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ-ਬਾਰ ਕਾਇਮ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪੱਕਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਥੇ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਬਰਬਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਬਾਹੀ, ਅਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਖੁਦਗਰਜ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਠੂਠਾ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਲਗਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਫੰਧਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਥਾਪਿ = ਥਾਪ ਕੇ, ਪੱਕਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ। ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ = ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਨੂੰ। ਥਿਰੁ = ਟਿਕ ਕੇ। ਥਾਨਿ = (ਉਸ) ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ। ਸੁਹਾਵੈ = ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪੁ = ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ। ਪਛਾਣੈ = ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਾ = ਜਦੋਂ। ਪਾਵੈ = ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਹ = ਜਿੱਥੇ, ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਤਹ = ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਬਿਨਸਿ = ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ। ਬਿਨਾਸਾ = ਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਭਾਵ। ਫੂਟੈ = ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਖਪਰੁ = ਭਾਂਡਾ। ਦੁਬਿਧਾ = ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ। ਮਨਸਾ = {मनीषा} ਮਨ ਦਾ ਫੁਰਨਾ। ਤੇ = ਤੋਂ। ਮਮਤਾ = ਅਪਣੱਤ, ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ। ਤਾ ਕੇ = ਉਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦੇ।੨੦।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਪੱਕਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ (ਹੀ ਆਸਾਂ ਟਿਕੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ) ਉਥੇ ਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਭਾਵ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਂਡਾ (ਹੀ) ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਮੈਂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ।੨੦।੧।
